Works by four Uni students go on display in Millikin University art show

Works by four Uni students have been selected for display in Millikin University's third annual high school invitational art show, which begins Saturday and lasts until Dec. 4. The show begins with a reception and awards presentation. The students whose works have been chosen are Eddie Diazmunoz, Lisa Sproat, Andrea Bajcsy, and Rohit Palekar.

Boys soccer: Dan Lilly repeats as News-Gazette all-area first-team selection

The News-Gazette released its all-area selections this week, and senior Dan Lilly was again named to the first team while freshman Tarik Koric made second team. Senior Nile Hamer, senior Neil Pearson, and freshman Patrick Wong received honorable mentions.

Fall sports awards '09: Teams honor athletes as season comes to end

The Uni High Booster Club hosted an awards dinner Sunday in Uni Gym to mark the end of the fall sports season. The event honored the success of this year's fall athletes representing boys and girls cross country, boys soccer, girls swimming, and girls volleyball. Chess: Uni players take top honors at statewide meet

Led by subfreshman Shawn Lu's perfect record against eighth-grade competition and junior John Vaughen's winning performance against 11th-graders, six Uni players took home trophies Saturday from the Illinois State Scholastic All Grade Championships, an official U.S. Chess Federation event. Uni won team titles in the eighth-grade and combined high school levels.

A grant in no way scant: Inventors Club awarded prestigious InvenTeams funding

The Uni High Inventors Club today was one of just 15 teams nationwide to be chosen for the 2009-10 MIT-Lemelson InvenTeams initiative. The club won a grant of more than $7,000 to develop a device that will reuse waste from shrimp farms and thereby prevent the destruction of coral reefs.

Mestre, Vazquez earn accolades from National Hispanic Recognition Program

Seniors Maritza Mestre and Isabel Vazquez were among only 5,000 students to be named National Hispanic Scholars out of almost 200,000 who applied. Since 1983 the program has identified outstanding Hispanic high school students and shared information about them with subscribing colleges and universities.

Almost 30 percent of Uni seniors honored as National Merit Commended Students

Eighteen seniors have been named National Merit Commended Students due to their high scores on the PSAT/NMSQT last fall. When combined with the 23 percent who were named semifinalists last month, more than half of all Uni seniors have earned National Merit honors.

Practice pays off: 27 Uni musicians named all-district

For the second consecutive year, a remarkable 27 of fine arts executive teacher Rick Murphy's students were named IMEA all-district musicians. The district jazz festival is scheduled for Nov. 7 at Illinois Wesleyan University, followed two weeks later by the district junior/senior festival at Illinois State University. Learn more inside.

Harmon, Allston-Yeagle honored as National Achievement Semifinalists

Seniors Rachel Harmon and Langston Allston-Yeagle were among just 1,600 students to be named semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, an academic competition run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They now have the opportunity to become one of 1,300 finalists.

Uni seniors, '09 alums earn College Board honors for performance on AP exams

Seven current students and 12 recent graduates have earned AP Scholar awards in recognition of their achievement on AP exams. Each honoree will receive a certificate from the College Board. Check inside for details.

Almost quarter of Class of 2010 named National Merit Semifinalists

Fourteen Uni High seniors have just been announced as semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program. Uni is tied for 11th in Illinois for having the most semifinalists and is near the top in percentage. Check inside for the list of Uni honorees.

Latin students excel in state, national exams

Uni Latin students continued their tradition of excellence with strong performances this spring in the Illinois Latin Contest and the National Latin Exam. Six students advanced to the state finals of the Illinois contest; two of them placed at state. Nine students, meanwhile, won gold medals as the top scorers in the national exam.

Year-end awards: Chambers wins top honor as Uni recognizes student accomplishments

Senior Isaac Chambers won the Student of the Year Award at Tuesday's annual ceremony. Other award winners announced for the first time included seniors Adam Tiouririne, Daniel Borup, and Natsuki Nakamura. Check inside for more about these and other honorees.

Skoza, Taylor named Athletes of the Year

Seniors Rachel Skoza and Malcolm Taylor were named Female and Male Athletes of the Year Tuesday night at the spring athletic awards ceremony in Uni Gym. Also honored were seniors Daniel Borup and Adam Tiouririne, and many IHSA and East Central Illinois Conference scholar athletes. Check inside for details.

Among the elite: Tribune names Daniel Borup one of 70 all-state academic regional finalists

Daneiel Borup received his latest accolade Sunday from the Chicago Tribune. The paper announced that Borup was one of 70 regional finalists for the 24th annual Tribune All-State Academic Team. Although he was not one of the 10 students selected to be on the team, Borup and the other regional finalists were featured in an accompnaying article titled "The class from across the state."
