Girls swimming: Nelson advances to state for second year, team takes fifth at sectionals

Sophomore Milee Nelson will be competing the IHSA girls swimming state meet thanks to her sectional victory in the 500-yard freestyle Saturday. Nelson led Uni to a fifth-place finish as a team. This will be Nelson's second consecutive appearance at the state meet.

The 2009 swim season is drawing to a close, and for the team's four senior captains, that also means the end of their high school swimming careers. Recently, Eunjung Kim sat down with the foursome and asked them to share some of their memories of Uni High swimming.

First person: Swimming for charity

On Wednesday the Uni and Urbana girls swim teams will hold their annual Make a Difference Meet. You can come out and cheer on Uni's dynamic swimmers at the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center while also helping out a good cause, the Center for Women in Transition. Read on for details.

The week in Uni sports: A roundup of varsity action, Sept. 28-Oct. 3

Last week was a busy stretch for boys soccer, girls swimming, and girls volleyball. On the soccer field, the Illineks proved their recent tie with Champaign Central was no fluke, turning in three strong performances. The swim team kept progressing against top competition, while the volleyball team had a very successful week, ending with a repeat victory as Crusader Invitational champs.

The highlight of the week came Thursday as boys soccer put a scare into Champaign Central, taking a 1-0 lead and holding on for a 1-1 tie. The cross country teams turned in fine showings at two meets. The swimming team chalked up a victory, while the volleyball team played tough against a Decatur Lutheran powerhouse.

As the fall season approached its mid-point, both cross country teams won their home meet and put forward a strong showing at the Tuscola Invitational. Boys soccer stepped it up on defense in a scoreless tie against Danville Schlarman, volleyball continued its conference success, and girls swimming made strides against top competition. Girls swimming preview '09: Anemones united for another great season

The Uni girls swim team is back, following last year's very successful season. Despite losing four talented swimmers, including state-qualifying senior Lisa Boyce, the Anemones add several underclassmen to most of last year's team. Striving to "work hard, have fun, and aim high," what looks to be an intriguing season begins Saturday at Stanford Olympia.
