Tennis: Mestre, Roth impress at USTA nationals

Freshmen Alex Mestre and Edo Roth recently helped their Midwest champion Illinois team finish in eighth place in the 14-and-under advanced division at the recent U.S. Tennis Association National Championships. Mestre went 4-1 at the three-day tourney in Mobile, Ala., while Roth went 2-3. Check inside for more details.

On the rise: Postseason success bodes well for Uni tennis

When Allan Luo and Richard Wang graduated Saturday, they had plenty of academic accomplishments to their credit. But one of their last achievements as Uni students came on the tennis court. Luo and Wang made it to the third round of the IHSA Urbana boys sectional in late May.

Tennis: Uni beats Urbana! … kind of

Fine, says Chris Yoder: It was our varsity against their JV. It was more of a scrimmage than a real match. Their players were picked by their coach so we would play competitive tennis. But we won. Uni tennis beat the Urbana JV. It wasn't really anything to gloat about. Its significance comes in that it was Uni’s first team tennis match ever.

First person: In praise of Uni tennis

[UPDATED with tennis sectional results] This afternoon, senior Ammar Rizwan and junior Richard Wang will represent Uni in the IHSA Urbana tennis sectional. Their appearance in the IHSA postseason culminates the first year of Uni's tennis club, sponsored by chemistry teacher David Bergandine. Sophomore Chris Yoder has been a club member from the start, and he offers a first-person look at this group of dedicated athletes.
