The 2012 girls soccer season came to an end after a 1-3 loss to St. Thomas More. This was Uni's third time playing St. Thomas More this season, and unfortunately, the Illineks were not able to pull off a victory over the Sabers.
There is much to be celebrated, seeing as this season was a successful one. Not only did the team end the season with a 10-7-2 record, but the team went all the way to the regional finals before their season's end.
Before the regional final, the Illineks were on a four game winning streak. Within that winning streak was the 1-0 win over Uni's new-found rivals Warrensburg Latham. The team also had a convincing 6-2 win over Monticello in the semifinal round of regionals, thanks to senior Jamie Blue's hat trick. Juniors Sarah Vaughen and Juliana Trach also scored two goals and one goal respectively. Sophomore Mara Dolan also had three assists.
Overall, the 2012 soccer season was a success. Though there were some rough patches, that's to be expected when a team loses eight influential, key players each season. For the past two seasons, eight senior have left holes in the lineup, and after this season, there will, again, be eight more spots to fill.
The 2013 soccer team has some work cut out for them, especially when it comes to finding balance and chemistry among the team. There is no doubt, though, that they will rise to the occasion next season.
For now, we can say congratulations in reference to the success of the 2012 girls soccer season and goodbye and good luck to eight wonderful athletes!
