2011-2012 boys basketball season sets new record

When the 2011-2012 boys basketball season ended, so did the Uni basketball careers of eleven seniors. With an overall record of 19-8 and reaching the regional championship, the Illineks finished the season going farther in the post season than any other boys basketball team in Uni history.

The Illineks reached the regional championship under the new leadership of Uni alum Al Renner and set a new record in Uni history. Unfortunately, they lost to Fisher, with the final score resting at 24-39.

Out of the 13 person squad, 11 were seniors. The only two varsity members that will be returning next year will be juniors Nealay Kalita and Patrick Wong.

To the seniors, it seems what will be most missed about leaving the Uni basketball team is the bond that the members have with each other.

"[The team is] a good group of guys," said senior Joseph Song. "They were people that you can't stay mad at. Some practices were tough and some people made mistakes but you just love them anyway."

Song's two favorite moments of the 2011-2012 basketball season were senior night, when Uni exacted its revenge on Notre Dame de la Salette, who beat them sufficiently earlier in the season, and Patrick Wong's game winning shot in the first game of regional.

"It was a prayer," said Song, "but it went in and extended my season."

"It was a exciting season," said director of basketball operations Wyatt Bensken. "There were ups and downs as well as a lot of exciting games. Our senior night game is definitely a night to remember as our regional run."

This season has been most memorable, and with the departure of 11 varsity members, there will be large gaps to fill. But that's something to work on next year.

The boys season will be remembered for years to come for all that they accomplished.

I thought the spirit of this team was incredible. It might sound strange, but I might have been most proud when they were down by a lot in the second half of their last game. But they kept playing hard, supported each other, behaved with class until the very end. Doc Walk
