When & Where: 7:30 tonight at Kenney Gym
Season Records: Uni: 8-4 overall, 3-0 East Central Illinois Conference; Calvary: 5-7, 3-0 ECIC
Why You Should Be There: As we near the halfway point in Uni's season, both the Illineks and Normal Calvary are undefeated in conference play, with identical 3-0 marks. This game features two of the best guards in Central Illinois, as both Calvary's Grant Touma and Uni's Dan Lilly are averaging more than 20 points per game. Down the road, this game could determine who wins the conference.
URBANA — In a matchup that could determine who wins the East Central Illinois Conference, the Illineks will take on the Normal Calvary Baptist Crusaders tonight at Kenney Gym.
Both teams are undefeated in the ECIC and feature dominating junior guards in Calvary's Grant Touma and Uni's Dan Lilly.
The 6-foot-3 Lilly enters the game averaging 20.2 points per game, good for sixth in the News-Gazette area. He's shooting 48 percent from three-point range and 82 percent from the free-throw line. In fact, The News-Gazette ran a story about Lilly on the front page of today's sports section titled "Hay! That's a sweet shot."
The 6-5 Touma, meanwhile, is the Bloomington Pantagraph's area leader in scoring, averaging 25.3 points per game. His scoring accounts for 41.6 percent of the team's season total, and on Friday, he scored 43 in a 77-61 win over ECIC opponent Judah Christian.
Although the Illineks boast the superior overall record at 8-4 to Normal Calvary's 5-7, both teams have had no trouble in conference play, each going 3-0; both schools have won all of their ECIC games by at least 18 points. Tonight's contest promises to be the most challenging conference match either team has had this season.
While the Crusaders have a superior offense (60.9 ppg to Uni's 54.3), the Illineks have a much more dominating defense, having held opponents to 44.3 ppg in contrast to Calvary's 59.7 ppg.
Uni has won seven of the eight matchups with the Crusaders since the teams joined the ECIC before the 2004-05 season.
Last year Uni won both games, beating Calvary 74-51 in Normal and 68-53 at home.
The JV begins play at 6 p.m., with the varsity matchup to follow at approximately 7:30.
The Illineks will be at home three times over the course of the next seven days, with admission to both games this week half-price as part of Spirit Week. On Friday, the Illineks will take on DeLand-Weldon, also for a reduced price.
