Basketball roundup: Girls, boys drop nonleague games

URBANA/LEXINGTON — It was a tough day for Uni varsity basketball on Saturday, with both the girls and boys losing by double digits. The good news, though, is that both games were nonleague. The girls are still only one game behind East Central Illinois Conference leader Decatur Lutheran, while the boys remain tied for the ECIC lead with Normal Calvary Baptist, setting up a showdown with the Crusaders Tuesday night at Kenney Gym.

Girls: Fisher 70, Uni 53

URBANA — Despite a combined 33 points from the duo of senior Rachel Skoza and freshman Jamie Blue, the Illineks fell to Fisher 70-53 in a nonconference matchup Saturday afternoon at Kenney.

Uni is now 9-6 overall but 3-1 in the ECIC. Skoza netted 18 points, while Blue scored 15.

After building a 20-15 lead in the first quarter, Fisher pulled away in the second with a 15-7 run. A 27-12 third quarter iced the game for the visiting Bunnies.

Junior Savannah Piety led Fisher with a game-high 22 points, while Tiffany Wallick added 16. The Bunnies are 13-5.

The Illineks will be back in action on Monday as they tip off Spirit Week with an ECIC contest at Kenney against Normal Calvary Baptist.

Boys: Lexington 64, Uni 40

LEXINGTON — Uni's three-game winning streak came to an end Saturday night against the host Lexington Minutemen, who used Michael Emberton's game-high 20 points and Dylan Toon's 18 to secure a 64-40 nonconference victory.

Junior Dan Lilly was the only Illinek to score in double figures. His 19 points included two three-pointers and seven free throws.

Sophomores Will Fernandez and Warren Skoza did an impressive job on the boards, combining for 17 rebounds (Fernandez nine, Skoza eight).

Lexington went into halftime with a commanding 37-19 lead. An 18-9 third quarter by the Minutemen put the contest out of reach.

The Illineks are now 8-4 overall, but their ECIC record stays at 3-0. Uni is tied for the conference lead with 3-0 Normal Calvary Baptist.

Led by prolific scorer Grant Touma, the Crusaders will come into Kenney Gym Tuesday night for a game that will go a long way toward determining this year's ECIC champion.
