Girls basketball: Uni heads into winter break with resounding win over LeRoy

Summary: Freshman Jamie Blue and senior Rachel Skoza combined for 38 points as Uni had little trouble beating nonconference visitor LeRoy. Blue recorded her second straight triple-double, adding 13 rebounds and 10 assists to her game-high 21 points. The Illineks dominated the first half, building a 40-16 lead.

Next Game: Away at ECIC opponent Buckley Christ Lutheran on Tuesday, Jan. 6; varsity-only game to begin at 6 p.m.

URBANA — Winter break began on a high note for the Illineks today as they defeated visiting nonconference opponent LeRoy 59-45 at Kenney Gym.

The 14-point winning margin was actually deceptive, with LeRoy closing the gap in the second half against Uni reserves. The Illineks enjoyed leads of more than 20 points when all of the team's starters were on the floor.

Freshman Jamie Blue continued to make her debut season a memorable one, posing matchup challenges that the Panthers couldn't answer. She recorded her second straight triple-double: 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Blue had a 12-10-10 triple-double on Monday against conference rival Judah Christian.

Senior post player Rachel Skoza also had a strong game, dominating the inside and netting 17 points.

The Illineks took control early with their best first quarter of the season, outscoring LeRoy 22-10. The second quarter was even better, at least from a defensive standpoint, as Uni held the visitors to only six points and went into halftime with a 40-16 lead.

With the victory, Uni heads into the two-week holiday break with a 7-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the East Central Illinois Conference.

The girls will return to action on Jan. 6 with a varsity-only contest against ECIC opponent Buckley Christ Lutheran.
