MONTICELLO — The Uni boys continued their dominance on Tuesday as they won a five-team meet in Monticello even without their No. 2 runner, Nathan Smith, who sat out with a sore hip. The girls also did well, finishing a close second, only six points behind host Monticello.
Once again, junior Elizabeth Russell, who finished the three-mile course with a time of 21:57, led the girls with a third-place finish. Following Russell was senior Elaine Gu, who finished fourth with a time of 22:12. Senior Maddy Levin placed 10th with a time of 22:50.
Following Levin were juniors Katherine Allen in (14th, 23:14), Brittany Scheid (18th, 23:43), and freshman Shruti Vaidya (22nd, 24:23), giving Uni a total of 49 points, earning them second place behind the Sages (43) and ahead of St. Thomas More (52).
The boys claimed four of the top 10 spots without Smith. Had he participated, the boys’ five scoring runners would most likely have all placed in the top 10.
Senior Malcolm Taylor led the team with his time of 17:26, earning him fourth place, followed by sophomores Buck Walsh (sixth, 17:32), Albert Anastasio (seventh, 17:45), and senior Isaac Chambers (ninth, 18:13) in the top 10.
Uni runners in the top 20 included junior Langston Allston-Yeagle (11th, 18:28), who finished fifth on the team, sophomore Ziran Shang (14th, 18:40), and juniors Andrew Weatherhead (16th, 18:43) and Jack Snyder (18th, 18:46).
The boys won with 32 points, 17 ahead of second-place Tolono Unity.
This week, the boys also moved to seventh in the Dyestat Illinois rankings, two spots up from the ninth-place slot they held last week. Shelbyville, whom the Illineks beat Saturday at the Tuscola Classic, has dropped to eighth.
The boys will have another chance to improve their ranking on Saturday at the St. Joseph Spartan Classic. St. Joseph-Ogden, the host team, is ranked third in the state. The girls race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the boys to follow.
