URBANA — In what was already a record-setting season, the Uni girls volleyball team reached two more milestones tonight.
In a senior night victory over conference foe Judah Christian, the Illineks won their 20th match of the season and finished with their best-ever conference record.
- Result: Uni defeated Judah Christian in two games: 25-14, 25-15
- Uni record: 20-10 overall, 9-3 ECIC
- Recap: Uni volleyball reached 20 wins in a season for the first time in school history
- Next match: Clinton (Class 2A regionals), Tuesday, Oct. 23, Clinton H.S; match to begin at 6 p.m.
Uni defeated the visiting Tribe 25-14, 25-15. With the win, the Illineks finished the regular season 20-10 overall, 9-3 in the East Central Illinois Conference.
The Illineks' previous best conference record was last year's 8-4 mark. As for overall wins, Uni has been in uncharted territory since Oct. 6, when the girls broke last year's record for most victories (15).
Tonight's win also secured second place in the ECIC behind powerhouse Decatur Lutheran, which finished undefeated in the conference and 27-2 overall.
Judah Christian finished the regular season 7-12, 5-7.
Six Illinek seniors were honored before the match: Chelsea Freeland, Claire Johnson, Sarah Pfander, Jamie Weiser, Ruthie Welch (Uni's career leader in assists), and Karen Woodley.
They are the winningest class in Uni volleyball history. During each of their last three seasons, the team has set a school record for wins: 14 in 2005, 15 in 2006, and 20 (and counting) this year.
Woodley led the Illineks tonight with eight kills and two blocks. Junior Rachel Skoza added five kills, followed by Welch with three and Freeland with two.
Welch had eight assists and four aces to lead Uni in both categories. Junior setter Sheri Grill had five assists.
Weiser led the team in digs with six. Pfander added five, Welch three, and junior Annie Machesky three.
Woodley scored three aces, Johnson two, and Weiser one.
The girls will begin postseason action on Tuesday when they visit Clinton High School for the first round of Class 2A regionals. Uni is the No. 9 seed in subsectional B of the Tolono Unity sectional; Clinton is No. 7. The match will begin at 6 p.m. If the Illneks win, they will play No. 2 Monticello on Thursday.
In JV action, Uni lost to Judah Christian 14-25, 18-25.
