Overachievers

Column: Confessions of a former overachiever

When Nancy Tang went to Shanghai a year ago, she was the very model of an overachieving student. But she returned to Uni a different person: "I had devoted so much energy to my perfect grades and extensive résumé, and yet they really didn't set me apart. I had shaped myself into the image of all other typical overachievers."

A former overachiever

I'm glad to be back at Uni. It still feels comfortable and familiar. But although Uni hasn't changed a bit, I can't say the same about myself.

Always multi-tasking

We live in an age of multi-tasking. Instead of just doing homework, talking to someone on the phone, eating a snack, listening to music, or watching TV, we do them all together.

Column: The never-ending expectations facing an "overachiever"

Just like many other Uni students, junior editor Maritza Mestre has grown up attempting to meet the expectations of those around her, sacrificing sleep and relaxation in order to make herself "the perfect student." But is it really worth it? And are these expectations realistic?

Never-ending expectations

It's everywhere I go. Teachers, relatives, friends, even books and the media remind me of it day after day, and there’s no escaping it.

Column: An end to overachieving

For as long as Elaine Gu can remember, she put an extra effort into everything she did. But no more. "Somehow, after years of attending Uni, I have lost my will to overachieve," she writes. "I no longer get papers done a week before they’re due. I no longer go the extra step to perfect my daily assignments." The one consolation? Only one more year left before college.
