The best of 2012: Albums

For Gargoyle Editor Sierra Maniates-Selvin, 2012 was a great year for discovering new music, and finding new albums from her favorite bands. Here are some of her favorite listens of the year.

The best of 2011: Top ten albums of 2011

As we jump head first into 2012, the Gargoyle is looking back at the past year. In each top ten list, reporters discuss what they consider 2011's most noteworthy pieces of news, pop culture, and more. Read this edition to find out Desmond Powers' choices for last year's most memorable albums.

Blog: Pandora

To be honest, this blog topic took me a while to think up. The creative juices just were not flowing. At first, I contemplated writing about my plans for this summer but a couple of sentences in, I realized I have no plans to speak of. Then fellow staff writer Jefferson Fu suggested that I write about his life goal of one day turning into a plant and being able to photosynthesize.

Blog: Girl Talk

Recently (but before he performed at the Canopy Club), I discovered Greg Gillis, known to his fans as Girl Talk. Girl Talk is an interesting and innovative artist who has been around for awhile; he creates mashup remixes by combining samples of many songs in a way that blends them into a seamless whole.

Blog: Mixing with Willio

I have always been interested in music. Be it classical pieces by Bach or Mozart or current day hits, such as Katy Perry's "Fireworks", anything really floats my boat. When people ask me what kind of music I like to listen to I will respond, "Anything you put on I will end up enjoying!"

Jenny's Top 5 Laughable Lyrics

I like pop music. I love cranking down the windows and singing to whatever is playing on the hit radio station. Now I know that these artists aren't exactly Harvard literature graduates and their lyrics do deserve a little leeway when being dissected for inner meaning. But, there are certain lines that always make me pause and wonder if they really just said that.

Ten Songs to Get You Through the Day

Uni High is really hard.

While I love our high school, the amount of work we must do along with the extracurricular activities we plan out, it never seems like I have enough time to do everything that I need to do. In fact this very blog was due yesterday (sorry Ms. Lombardi, calculus takes over my Thursday nights).

Happy Record Store Day!

I follow music in the same way some people follow sports. I know the names of the players, I know their stats. I can name every musician in a group, I can tell you about every album they've ever released, I can give you dates of singles and call up remixes like a pro.

Music — pastime turned addiction

What do you call a song stuck in your head? An earworm, or more appropriately, a nuisance.

First, some background. "Earworm" comes from the German word "ohrwurm," which literally means an earworm, but figuratively means a song stuck in the head.

Staten Island's got talent!

I have found something amazing on YouTube. Actually, about 70 amazing somethings. Seventy amazing 10-year-old singing somethings.

If the water trick doesn't work … music to study by

Finals have never really bothered me. You sit for two hours, scribble an equation or two, and then you're done. At that point, nothing you can do will change the outcome. It's just whatever.

The real problem lies the week before. You can study, or go to a movie. Study, or hang out with your friends. Study, or sleep. And, at least for me, studying is never high on the list.

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch

I love Christmas music.

Being almost anti-religious, Christmas isn't one of my favorite holidays, what with the weather, the stress of buying presents, and the always looming temptation of eating WAY too much. But the music, I love.

Column: Fetish properties … what's up with that?

Feeling a little like Rob Gordon, the fictional record shop owner in the 2000 film "High Fidelity," Erin Hayes tries to figure out why she suddenly became obsessed with finding two Nirvana singles from 1993.

Goodbye to "good music"

Last Sunday night I was driving home with two fellow sophomores, Eddie Diazmunoz and Gabe Smith.

Since we were in Eddie's car we were listening to his iPod, which meant we were listening to his music, which meant I was doing a lot whining.

Why? Because Eddie likes punk and hardcore music, while I like mostly indie rock.
