Cards replace guards as security for Kenney Gym

In order to cut down the cost of securing Kenney Gym, the security guards have been replaced by security cameras and a prox card system. Students must now have a prox card with them to gain access to the building and tardies to P.E. from forgetting a prox card will not be excused. Many students have expressed frustration with this new policy.

Budget fallout: Uni library to close for two months

In previous years, the Uni High library has remained open throughout summer vacation. With this year's budget cuts at the University of Illinois, the library will close for two months, starting next week. But don't despair. Read on to find out how you can still get your reading fix for the summer.

Graduation to be one week earlier next year

Next year's seniors will be leaving Uni a little earlier than usual. Graduation, which usually takes place the last Saturday in May, will be moved up a week in 2011. Under the plan, commencement will take place May 21, but the rest of the student body will return to school the following week for final exams. What's behind the change?

Freshman English students help celebrate Champaign's 150th anniversary

The yearlong celebration of Champaign's 150th anniversary kicked off in March. For their part in celebrating Champaign's history, Adele Suslick's freshman English students created poster boards that describe famous historical buildings within the city. These poster boards are on display in the atrium of the City Building, 102 N. Neil St.

"A little funkier than I thought": Doc Walk looks back on his first year at Uni High

After nearly a year of roving the halls and greeting students, Dr. Jeff Walkington has become a familiar sight around Uni High. "Doc Walk" took over as director in mid-July, replacing the now-retired Dr. Steve Epperson. "It was just time": Advancement Director Karen Cooley to retire at end of June

After spending three years at Uni and more than 34 years at the University of Illinois, Director of Advancement Karen Cooley has announced her upcoming retirement. Cooley wants to spend more time with her husband and sister, as well as volunteer her efforts to community service. Check inside to read more about Cooley's time here and plans for the future.

Giving students a healthier alternative: The new MC Café

By now, you've probably noticed the huge metal kiosk that has found its way into the Uni kitchen. It's there because junior Will Fernandez is piloting a new vending program at Uni, which he calls the MC Café. All the money will go into funds that provide financial aid for Uni students.

Election results: Class officers chosen for 2010-11

Subfreshmen through juniors voted Wednesday for next year's class officers, and the results are in. Earlier this spring, the executive officers of the 2010-11 Student Council were elected (president Will Fernandez, vice president Amrutha Kumaran, and secretary-treasurer Revathi Maturi). Big Show '10 preview: Pump up the volume!

After the water balloon fights, the bake sales, the dodgeball games, and the senior auction, only one thing remains to top off a successful X-Week: Big Show! This weekend, the annual comedy spectacular is ready to take center stage in the North Attic. All money raised will go toward the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.

S4BW brunch to benefit Developmental Services Center

On Saturday, members of the Uni community will get to munch on great breakfast foods while helping to make the world a better place. S4BW will host a benefit brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana. The purpose is to raise money for the Developmental Services Center, which serves developmentally disabled individuals in Champaign and Ford Counties.

ICTM '10: Uni math team finishes 7th at state finals

Despite competing against teams from schools up to eight times its size, Uni placed seventh in Division 3AA at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics state finals held Saturday. Walter Payton College Prep from Chicago won the state title with 751 points. Uni finished with 595 points.

Are you ready for X-Week?

Uni students have a lot on their plate at the end of the year, but there's still always time to help out a good cause. X-Week, an annual school tradition, will begin today and finish off with Big Show on Friday and Saturday. Student Council has decided to donate this year's profits to the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that provides lunch to those in need.

Another victory! Uni ExploraVision team wins international science competition

The ExploraVision team of juniors Eric Chen, Zach Korol-Gold, Chris Mathy, and sophomore Dax Earl has won first place in the grades 10-12 level of the international competition. Coached by science teacher David Stone, Uni teams have won the ExploraVision title a record four times since 1996.

Presidential Scholars update: Liu chosen as semifinalist

The second-round results of the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars Program have been announced, and Uni senior Diana Liu has been named one of the 560 national semifinalists. Liu is one step away from being a Presidential Scholar, a feat no Uni student has achieved since Amy Chew in 1999.
