Construction at Uni hits road block

Uni's major construction project - the one responsible for this year's traffic issues on Matthews - will no longer be able to continue as the project has almost doubled in cost. What the school has paid for will be finished, but the North Attic will not in fact be air-conditioned.

According to the Assistant Director Craig Russell, the project became impossible to finish when some engineers did a study and decided that with the insulation the North Attic has, it would take twice the amount of money to finish.

The lack of funding didn't end all construction. The school will have the line designed to carry super-cooled water in place, but will be unable to hook it up until the North Attic is properly insulated.

"F&S (Facilities and Services, a University of Illinois department) upped the price tremendously because of a very recent study, that contradicts all other studies, that says the North Attic would need insulation," said Director Jeff Walkington.

The price hike in air conditioning is recent too. "We don't think it's fair that they would inform us so late in the process [...] This started before I came here, and I'm still doing at least one thing a week to advance the project," said Walkington.

The other project, fixing the Uni gym foundation because the facilities copper downspouts were stolen, will be finished soon for the original price.

Russell said that the gym construction should have been finished in November, 2011, and the construction the school can pay for will be finishing soon.

Thanks, Thomas, for this article. While UI has found more difficulties for us on this project, I do think it's still alive. I'll keep fighting for the air conditioning! Doc Walk
