GLEE CLUB AT A GLANCE
What: Glee club
When & Where: Every Monday during Uni Period; south attic
Who: Sophomores Ella Lubienski, Sam Leroy, and junior Kaila Simpson are the club officers; everyone is invited; sponsored by Rick Murphy.
Why You Should Do It: It is a great opportunity for everyone to sing fun, popular music, even if they don't have much of a singing talent.

If you've been hearing the sounds of pop songs coming from the south attic, you've probably heard the singing voices of those in the new glee club. The glee club, which meets Mondays during Uni Period, was founded by sophomore Ella Lubienski.

Glee club! But what does everyone think of when someone even says the words 'glee' and 'club' in the same sentence? They think of Glee, the television show: high school drama interspersed with pop songs and wonderfully staged, costumed performances.

Uni glee club is a more casual club; anyone who wishes to sing can join. There is no pressure to sing well and the only requirement is that you come prepared to sing and have fun. Lubienski said that various songs will be sung, and the music will be of a different genre than that in the regular chorus class. The glee club plans on singing popular songs, both from today and from older music ages like the '60s. The club intends to focus on singing, but if members want to dance they might incorporate that in too.

The glee club plans on composing some of their own music. They also hope to sing at various community events.

Sophomore Sam Leroy, vice-president of the Uni glee club says: "We might do that [sing the national anthem] for boys and girls basketball games and other various little things — maybe go to a music club on Wednesdays and perform a recital there."

Lubienski was inspired to start a glee club after traveling to New Zealand on sabbatical in 2010. While there she joined a local glee club and had a wonderful time.

"... [W]hile I was gone, I was like, 'Oh, I should make a glee club,'" said Lubienski.

Even though Uni's new glee club is similar to the one on television, both Lubienski and Leroy are quite adamant that the Uni glee club is not to be associated with the television show.

"I thought people would like the club because they like the TV show, but we are not like the TV show. I mean the TV show is great, and I do like the TV show, but we can't afford to have those costumes or productions," said Lubienski.

"I personally thought that it is an OK show — some people like it, some don't — but we are not related to it at all," remarked Leroy.

Uni's glee club is sure to be a lot of fun as the members sing their hearts out to the popular tunes of our age. The club meets Mondays in the south attic, and everyone is encouraged to come and check it out.

"People should join because it is just an opportunity to do a really fun activity, which is singing, and be able to do that without any sort of pressure — without having to have a certain ability — to just come sing fun pieces just because they love to do it," said Leroy.
