UFU movie day to kick off personal sacrifice campaign

URBANA — The student group United for Uganda will host a movie day Friday in order to kick off the organization's personal sacrifice campaign. The documentary "Uganda Rising" will be shown in Room 109 at 2:15, after school’s 2 p.m. early dismissal. Some refreshments will be provided.

Uni students founded UFU in 2006 to increase awareness of and raise money for the “invisible children” of northern Uganda. Thousands of these children, members of the Acholi tribe, were abducted during the country's civil war by one of the armed factions, the Lord's Resistance Army, and forced to fight or serve as sex slaves.

The group's personal sacrifice campaign, which was last run in the fall of 2007, is open to Uni teachers and students. Participants sacrifice one item they regularly spend money on, such as coffee or trips out to eat, and donate to UFU the money they would have spent.

“[The campaign] is important because it really does bring a personal element to giving up your money,” said UFU club officer Rachel Harmon. “As a school, Uni High is really good about donating money and also things like volunteering for bake sales, but oftentimes those fundraisers fail to add that personal element and really point out why [students] are giving money and what they’re giving that money to."

The participant who donates the most money receives a prize, which will be announced by UFU as soon as it is determined. Donations will go to Come Let's Dance, a grassroots organization devoted to community building in Uganda.

"Uni students should contribute to the personal sacrifice campaign because Come Let's Dance is a very deserving organization, they're very small, and they need money." Harmon said. "Also, It’s cool to be able to sacrifice a part of your daily regimen and things you don’t really need for someone else."
