URBANA — Soccer standout Dan Lilly was named Wednesday as a first-team member of The New-Gazette’s All-Area Boys Soccer Team, following a season in which the senior forward broke Uni's career scoring record.

Only 12 players are selected for the first-team all-area honors, and 12 more are selected for second-team all-area. Freshman Tarik Koric was named to the second team. Senior Nile Hamer, senior Neil Pearson, and freshman Patrick Wong received honorable mentions.

The News-Gazette said this of Lilly: "Two-time N-G first-teamer and a 2009 all-state selection had 31 goals this fall and capped his career as Uni's career leader in goals with 73."

This is Lilly's second consecutive year as a News-Gazette first-teamer. For the last five seasons, Uni has had a player selected to the first team. In 2005, Al Renner received the honor after a history-making season in which he scored a school-record 36 goals. Following Renner came Michael Belmont in 2006, Jake Seeley in 2007, and Lilly last year.

On Sept. 12, the Lilly broke Tyson Masar's Uni career record of 62 goals in a 12-0 victory over Sullivan-Lovington. Masar set his record from 1997 to 2000. Lilly entered the season with 42 career goals.

Uni finished the 2009 campaign 10-6-4 overall, 2-1 in the East Central Illinois Conference. The Illineks' season came to an end Oct. 17 with a 3-1 loss to Judah Christian in the Class 1A Danville Schlarman regional semifinals.
