Anna Gooler holds out a support ribbon during the Day of Silence, which took place nationwide on Friday, April 17. Approximately 15 Uni students were registered to participate this year, along with many other unregistered participants and supporters. Organized at Uni by the Queer Straight Alliance, the event continued all day, with participants struggling to avoid spoken, written, or gestured communication to better understand the frustration that arises from not being able to speak freely about one's sexual identity. Students and supporters gathered in the senior alcove for a Silent Lunch as well. The Day of Silence, which began in 1996, is aimed at spreading awareness of the bullying and harassment faced by many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and their allies in schools across the country.
