Senior Nathan Smith (left) and junior Albert Anastasio lead the pack midway through the Kickapoo Kickoff Classic boys race Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Kickapoo State Park. The Uni boys won the eight-team competition, with Anastasio taking first (16:52) and Smith third (17:05). Anastasio edged St. Joseph-Ogden's Zach Elkins for the top spot by three seconds. The Uni girls also had a strong debut, placing third in a nine-team field. Elizabeth Russell led all Illineks with her fifth-place performance, running the three-mile course in 21:01. Freshman Sarah Vaughen had an impressive first race as a high school competitor. An IESA all-stater as a subbie, Vaughen placed 11th at Kickapoo with a time of 22:00.
