Senior Lizzy Warner stays focused as she runs the 300-meter low hurdles at the IHSA Class 1A girls sectional meet Saturday, May 16, at Tolono Unity High School. It was the final high school race for Warner, who won her heat and placed fifth overall, winning a sectional medal. She will run track next year at Knox College. Neither she nor any of her Uni teammates qualified for the state meet in Charleston. Junor Tuli Bera, a favorite to advance in the 100 dash, pulled her left hamstring during prelims Friday, May 15, and finished eighth in the finals the next day. The Uni 4x200 relay team didn't run because not enough girls were able to make it to the second day of sectionals. The storm front that hit Champaign-Urbana Friday night caused the meet to be suspended after several events. When action resumed Saturday morning, only three of the eight members of Uni's varsity team could participate; everyone else already had a full schedule. The other Illinek who competed, freshman Sarah Heffley, competed in the 800 run. She didn't place, but she cut five seconds off her time for a personal record.
