Up All Night

Junior Annie Machesky enjoys a spoonful of ice cream at the weekend lock-in sponsored by the Uni student organization United for Uganda. The lock-in took place at Uni High from 9 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday. Sophomores were invited to come to a dance in the first-floor hallway from 9 to 11:30, but only juniors and seniors could stay the night. Lock-in tickets cost $20, and all proceeds will go to the grassroots organization Come Let’s Dance, which is dedicated to helping Ugandan children. Uganda is emerging from a civil war that lasted 20 years and pitted the government against a rebel faction known as the Lord's Resistance Army. For most of the civil war, the LRA conscripted children from the Acholi tribe to serve as soldiers, creating a generation of child soldiers and many more whose lives were turned upside down in an attempt to evade the LRA. Students formed UFU two years ago to educate themselves and others about the state of affairs in Uganda and to raise money for that country's "invisible children."
