Date: 10/30/2009 Senior Daniel Wilson sports his "Where's Waldo?" costume while in the third-floor Windows lab today. Wilson was among dozens of students who came to Uni dressed in their Halloween best. During lunch, Student Council sponsored the school's annual costume contest. The event, held in Uni Gym, received a dozen contestants, and the bleachers quickly filled with spectators to cheer them on. As always, Student Council provided the crowd with candy, throwing a colorful array into the stands. The volume of the crowd dictated how well a contestant did, and the contest went through several rounds of elimination before the winners were finally chosen. Senior Lisa Boyce as Hannah Montana came out on top, followed by freshman Alex Valdez as a Uni prisoner. Wilson and junior Will Fernandez (as Picachu) rounded out the top four.

Date: 09/29/2009 The racks outside Uni High were much more crowded than usual on Tuesday, Sept. 29, as almost 30 students — just about 10 percent of the student body — heeded Green Club's call and biked to school. It was the club's first Bike-to-School Day, and according to organizers, the event was a great success. "It was awesome that so many of you decided to forgo carbon emissions for a day," Green Club co-founder Brittany Scheid said in a schoolwide e-mail, "and hopefully you'll consider biking as an alternative in the future." All of the student bikers were eligible for a random drawing that yielded five "get-out-of-fitness" passes for a day. The winners were Evan Ramos, Isabel Vazquez, Anna Gooler, Sarah Sutter, and Katie Buzard. Look for a Gargoyle video about Bike-to-School Day soon.

On the boys side, the Illineks repeated as Twin City champions, defeating runner-up Centennial 34-43. Senior Nathan Smith placed second with a near-record time of 16:17.

One focal point of the prank was a huge sign made out of tablecloths to mimic junior Nathan Smith's genius way of asking classmate Tuli Bera to prom. The prank also featured lettuce in the elevator (an inside joke that Uni students will easily get), upside down furniture, a new grand entrance into the lounge, and walls of furniture barricading all school entrances. Silly string, bed sheets, musical greeting cards, and large amounts of duct tape could also be found scattered around the school. This year's prank is surely one that will not be forgotten. We'll be publishing a photo essay soon.

It was the final high school race for Warner, who won her heat and placed fifth overall, winning a sectional medal. She will run track next year at Knox College. Neither she nor any of her Uni teammates qualified for the state meet in Charleston. Junor Tuli Bera, a favorite to advance in the 100 dash, pulled her left hamstring during prelims Friday, May 15, and finished eighth in the finals the next day. The Uni 4x200 relay team didn't run because not enough girls were able to make it to the second day of sectionals. The storm front that hit Champaign-Urbana Friday night caused the meet to be suspended after several events. When action resumed Saturday morning, only three of the eight members of Uni's varsity team could participate; everyone else already had a full schedule. The other Illinek who competed, freshman Sarah Heffley, competed in the 800 run. She didn't place, but she cut five seconds off her time for a personal record.

The girls will compete in the Class A sectionals at Tolono Unity High School on Friday, May 15. After missing much of the track season due to injury, Bera is back and ready to challenge for a place at the IHSA state meet. Last year she finished third in the 100 at sectionals, missing a qualifying berth by a thousandth of a second. (The top two athletes in each event at sectionals automatically qualify for state.) The state meet is scheduled for Thursday, May 21 (prelims), and Saturday, May 23 (finals), at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Date: 04/18/2009 Stefanie Senior shows off her stylish outfit Saturday night at the Uni High Spring Fling. The sophomore was one of many students who turned out for the annual April dance, which took place this year at the Worden-Martin showroom in Champaign. A car dealership might seem like an unusual place for a dance, but Uni has held other events at Worden-Martin, most notably a James Bond-themed prom several years ago. Speaking of which, the next big dance on Uni's social calendar is, of course, prom, scheduled for May 9 at the Champaign Country Club.

Date: 04/17/2009 Anna Gooler holds out a support ribbon during the Day of Silence, which took place nationwide on Friday, April 17. Approximately 15 Uni students were registered to participate this year, along with many other unregistered participants and supporters. Organized at Uni by the Queer Straight Alliance, the event continued all day, with participants struggling to avoid spoken, written, or gestured communication to better understand the frustration that arises from not being able to speak freely about one's sexual identity. Students and supporters gathered in the senior alcove for a Silent Lunch as well. The Day of Silence, which began in 1996, is aimed at spreading awareness of the bullying and harassment faced by many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and their allies in schools across the country.

Date: 04/16/2009 Senior Joy Shapley (left) collides with a Macon Meridian defender during Uni's 7-0 home victory Thursday. Erika Belmont scored three goals and fellow junior center midfielder Michelle Wong added two more in the rout. Junior Katie Buzard and freshman Abby Radnitzer also scored for the Illineks, who raised their record to 6-3 overall. Uni's tenacious defense held Meridian to zero shots on goal en route to the team's fifth shutout triumph. The win represented a big rebound from the previous day's 4-1 loss to Class 2A Charleston. That road game was played in what amounted to a mud bowl of a field. Even so, Uni controlled the ball for most of the contest; three of Charleston's goals came on corner kicks. The girls will return to action Saturday morning at home against conference opponent Normal Calvary Baptist. Uni is 1-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

Date: 04/07/2009 Teddy Zamora-Mills displays the half splint that he had to wear after injuring his left forearm during the opening number of Friday night's performance of "West Side Story." (Since this picture was taken, a cast has replaced the splint.) Playing Shark leader Bernardo in Uni's spring musical, the senior fell during the prologue and fractured the ulna and radius bones in his forearm. Despite the pain, Zamora-Mills continued performing until he finished all his scenes. The only concession he made was to forgo lifting his partner, senior Sarah Lake-Rayburn (girlfriend Anita), in one of the big dance numbers. During intermission Assistant Director Sue Kovacs drove him to the Carle emergency room. Despite the injury, Zamora-Mills returned to action for both shows Saturday! Injuries notwithstanding, the musical was a triumph, with all four shows selling out days in advance. Barbara Ridenour was director and Rick Murphy music director.

Date: 01/27/2009 Junior Dan Lilly goes in for a layup Tuesday night against conference rival Judah Christian. Lilly had a game-high 26 points in the Illineks' 65-38 road victory. A close contest turned into a rout as the Illineks outscored the Tribe 25-2 in the final eight minutes. The Judah gymnasium was packed, and the atmosphere was like a playoff game. For all practical purposes, the season was in the balance for Uni — a loss would have effectively ended the team's chances for a conference title. Any doubt about the outcome ended when Uni went on a 20-0 run in the fourth quarter keyed by great rebounding and tough defense. The Illineks are 11-7 overall, 5-2 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

The highlight of the evening came early in the second half of the girls game when senior Rachel Skoza reached the 1,000-point mark. She now has 1,003 career points and joins four other female Illineks in the club: Sophia Neely ('86), Amanda Smeltzer ('97), Lis Pollock ('99), and Molly Smith ('05). A Good Day to Stay in Your Pajamas Plenty of students and staff, including library assistant Natalie Sapkarov, observed Spirit Week by coming to school in their PJs — Wednesday was Pajama Day, of course. Date: 01/14/2009 In fact, Wednesday would have been a good day just to stay home, given all the snow that fell overnight. But the show went on, and plenty of students and staff, including library assistant Natalie Sapkarov, observed Spirit Week by coming to school in their PJs — Wednesday was Pajama Day, of course. By the way, in the very unlikely event that you haven't heard, school is canceled for Thursday due to the extreme weather. Assuming that Uni reopens on Friday, the week will culminate in an all-school assembly featuring a rousing edition of Spirit Olympics. Friday will also be Class Colors Day.

Taylor finished as the IHSA state runner-up with a time of 49.74 seconds. He joins Warren Goodell as the highest-placing boys state track medalist in Uni history. Goodell was the state runner-up in the 880-yard run in 1941. Sophomore Ben Asmus of Heymouth won Saturday's race with a time of 49.11 seconds. In the span of just one week, Taylor vs. Asmus developed into one of the most compelling rivalries in Class A track. They competed against each other in the Monticello sectional on May 16, with Taylor winning the 400 title by just two-tenths of a second (49.20 - 49.40). Then a week later, running in separate state prelim heats on Friday, Taylor and Asmus tied each other (50.03) for the fastest time in Class A. Taylor was the only Uni athlete to compete in the Saturday finals. At the Friday prelims, senior Frankie McFarland (shot put, discus throw) and the 4x800 relay team (junior Isaac Chambers, senior Austin Rundus, senior Jacob Olshansky, and Taylor) competed but did not advance.
The Royal Masquerade Sophomore Tianna Pittenger looks absolutely fabulous as she makes her entrance to the 2008 Uni High prom, "The Royal Masquerade." Date: 05/17/2008 Sophomore Tianna Pittenger looks absolutely fabulous as she makes her entrance to the 2008 Uni High prom, "The Royal Masquerade." Prom was held at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center in Urbana from 8:30 to 11:45 p.m. Saturday, May 17. Organized by the Class of 2009, the event added yet another chapter to the book of memorable Uni prom nights. In all, 119 students attended, of whom about 40 percent came wearing masks in the spirit of the theme, according to junior class president Isaac Chambers. An iPod Touch drawing was held for those who wore a mask; junior Teddy Zamora-Mills was the lucky winner. Royalty consisted of seniors Isaac Radnitzer and Eunice How, king and queen, and juniors Russell Prochaska and Sheri Grill, prince and princess. This year's event was notable for several prom firsts. Thanks to Chambers, RSVPs were done online instead of through the mail, saving at least $150 in postage. In addition, two students catered prom — juniors Hannah Leskosky and Maddy Levin, who did so for their independent study on cookery. In 2007, catering took a good $1,500 from the prom committee's budget. This year only $400 had to be spent renting out an industrial kitchen and paying for food supplies. After prom was over, students were on their own, since there was no organized post-prom this year. Somehow students managed to make do, and all in all it was a busy, fun, and all-too-short night for Uni promgoers.
Giving Blood Senior Marika Iyer donates a unit of blood Thursday, May 15, as part of Student Council's annual blood drive in conjunction with Community Blood Services of Illinois. Sophomore Alexx Engles looks on. Date: 05/15/2008 Senior Marika Iyer donates a unit of blood Thursday, May 15, as part of Student Council's annual blood drive in conjunction with Community Blood Services of Illinois. Sophomore Alexx Engles looks on. By the end of the drive at 12:30 p.m., donors had given 17 units of blood. Many more students wanted to participate but could not because of various restrictions, such as low iron or having traveled within the past year to countries on the restricted list. Still, the outcome was good. Although the number of units was down from last year's 24, the total still exceeded the 14 units donated two years ago. One difference from the past several years was that the drive took place inside Uni Gym instead of in the Community Blood Services bus. The drive began at 8 a.m., and the entire donating process (including paperwork and recovery) took about 45 minutes per person, with the actual donation requiring only five to 10 minutes. CBSI conducts about 300 mobile blood drives each year throughout the East Central Illinois region. The organization also has blood donor centers in Urbana (1408 W. University Ave.), Danville, and Mattoon. For more information about CBSI, click here. By the way, if you're curious about the markings under Marika's eyes, members of the girls soccer team wore eye black to school before traveling to Williamsville for a Class A sectional semifinal game. (The girls lost 3-0.)
On The Run Sophomore Tuli Bera begins the second leg of the 4x200-meter relay after a handoff from junior Rachel Skoza in the Class A sectional meet Friday, May 9, at Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School. I Date: 05/09/2008 Sophomore Tuli Bera begins the second leg of the 4x200-meter relay after a handoff from junior Rachel Skoza in the Class A sectional meet Friday, May 9, at Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School. In one of several close finishes for the Illineks, Uni placed fourth in the relay, just 1.5 seconds behind first-place Clinton. The 4x200 squad consisted of Skoza, Bera, freshman Ashley Huddson, and sophomore Rachel Harmon. Bera was involved in an even closer finish in the 100 dash. She ran the final heat in 13.085 seconds, but Alyssa Burgard of Monticello ran it in 13.084, good enough for second place and a trip to the state finals next weekend in Charleston. The lone Illinek to advance to state was senior Ruthie Welch, who set a meet record in the 800 with a time of 2:22.37, almost 4 seconds faster than rival Erika Ramos of Hoopeston Area. Ramos was a state finalist in the 800 last year, and Welch had never defeated her — until sectionals. In all, Uni scored 30 points to place ninth at the 17-team meet, just one point behind both Fisher and host PBL. St. Joseph-Ogden, with 87 points, won the sectional championship. Other Uni athletes who earned points for the team were junior Lizzy Warner in the 400 dash, third place (1:03.00), and the 4x400 team, fourth place (4:20.26). The 4x400 squad featured Welch, Skoza, Huddson, and Warner.
Spectacular Senior Day Suran Yoo controls the ball in Judah Christian territory during Uni's 7-0 victory against the visiting Tribe on Saturday, May 3. Date: 05/03/2008 Suran Yoo controls the ball in Judah Christian territory during Uni's 7-0 victory against the visiting Tribe on Saturday, May 3. Yoo was one of four seniors to score a goal in the Illineks' final regular-season home game of 2008. Zoë Schein led the way with two goals — the first goals of her Uni career. Shara Esbenshade and Chelsea Freeland also scored, along with sophomore Erika Belmont and junior Joy Shapley. After the game, team members and fans gathered around for a Senior Day celebration in which teammates read tributes to the 10 Illinek seniors: Yoo, Schein, Esbenshade, Freeland, Sarah Pfander, Jessica Stark, Emily Chu, Marika Iyer, Beth Peregrine, and Larissa Pittenger. Head coach Phil Anders presented each of the seniors with flowers. Uni is now 9-4-2 overall, 3-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference. The Illineks, seeded No. 4 in their Class A sectional, will visit No. 3 seed Decatur Lutheran on Monday, May 5, to play for the ECIC title.

Team members not pictured: senior Jie Han (copy editing) and sophomore Chris Yoder (first place, sports writing). Uni finished with 23 points at state, behind only Palatine Fremd High School (28). Fremd and Uni were the only teams to score more than 20 points. Sixty-seven schools competed. There were no divisions according to enrollment. The tournament consisted of 15 events in which students had to complete various journalism assignments on deadline. Yoder is the first Uni student to win a state title in an IHSA journalism event.
Steep Climb Freshman Lisa Sproat scales the climbing tower at the 4-H Memorial Camp adjacent to Allerton Park early Friday. Date: 04/18/2008 Freshman Lisa Sproat scales the climbing tower at the 4-H Memorial Camp adjacent to Allerton Park early Friday. The Class of 2011's Allerton field trip took place Thursday and Friday under the direction of health education teacher Andi Phillips and numerous parent and faculty volunteers. The students spent two days of climbing, falling, running, yelling, doing geometry, and building boats out of cardboard. "The trip went smoothly (with the exception of the earthquake …) and I enjoyed watching everyone work together and have so much fun," Phillips said in an e-mail. This was the third straight year that Uni freshmen have gone to Allerton. The idea and initial plans for this trip were developed in 2005 by current junior Isaac Chambers, who wanted a way to help his class bond and to provide some alternate learning experience. Chambers had done a similar trip in middle school and thought it would be a fun thing for Uni to try. "The Allerton trip is a great experience in many ways," said Chambers. "It allows students to learn in a new environment, bond with their fellow classmates, and get a break from the regular schedule."
Team Of The Week Sophomore forward Erika Belmont (12) looks for an open teammate during Uni High's 6-0 conference victory over Decatur Christian on Thursday, April 17. Date: 04/17/2008 Sophomore forward Erika Belmont (12) looks for an open teammate during Uni High's 6-0 conference victory over Decatur Christian on Thursday, April 17. Uni dominated the contest, outshooting the host Warriors 33-2. The Illineks scored five goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, a fitting performance on the same day that The News-Gazette named them the "Team of the Week" and published a feature article about Belmont and classmate Michelle Wong. The sophomore duo accounted for three of Uni's six goals against the Warriors: two by Belmont and one by Wong (on a penalty kick in the first half). Also scoring for Uni were senior Suran Yoo, junior Joy Shapley, and senior Sarah Pfander, who started at goalkeeper but moved to midfielder for most of the game. Backup goalkeeper Lor Sligar preserved the shutout win by making a pointblank save on a Decatur Christian penalty kick in the 71st minute. The win was Uni's third straight shutout victory. The Illineks are now 6-1-1 overall, 2-0 in the East Central Illinois Conference.
Much Ado About the Spring Play Seniors Jamie Weiser (as Hero, daughter of the governor of Messina) and Julian Hartman (as Claudio, a young lord of Florence) rehearse a scene from Uni High's spring play, "Much Ado About Nothing." Date: 04/02/2008 Seniors Jamie Weiser (as Hero, daughter of the governor of Messina) and Julian Hartman (as Claudio, a young lord of Florence) rehearse a scene from Uni High's spring play, "Much Ado About Nothing." The Shakespeare comedy, directed by fine arts teacher Barbara Ridenour, will be performed in the North Attic Playhouse this week. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3; 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 4; and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5. Tickets are $5 for students and senior citizens, $6 for adults. The entire cast and crew have been putting in marathon days and nights during tech week. The production features must-see, drop-dead gorgeous costumes, superb live music, the usual excellent acting — and the Rufty Tufty! Kudos go out to costume director Mary Stasheff. As cast member Anna Cangellaris said of this week's dress rehearsals: "With the cast dressed in such stately and elegant garb, I noticed us standing taller and falling into the mannerisms and demeanors of our characters. The atmosphere of the North Attic that was tinged with bits of uncertainty and nervousness the night before began to fill with confidence and energy as the story of the play started to come to life."
On The Move Sophomore forward Michelle Wong heads toward the St. Thomas More net on Thursday, March 27, in the second half of Uni's 3-2 victory over the visiting Sabers. Date: 03/27/2008 Sophomore forward Michelle Wong heads toward the St. Thomas More net on Thursday, March 27, in the second half of Uni's 3-2 victory over the visiting Sabers. Wong scored the winning goal, breaking a 2-2 tie in the 65th minute of the game. Senior Aran Yoo, in her first year of playing high school soccer, scored Uni's first two goals; her twin sister, Suran, assisted on both plays. The win raised Uni's varsity record to 2-0. For the first time ever, the girls soccer team has defeated both St. Thomas More and Centennial. The Illineks shocked the Class AA Chargers 2-1 on Tuesday, March 25. Against both Champaign opponents, Uni came back from deficits to pull out the win: The girls were down 1-0 against Centennial and 2-0 against STM. Also on Thursday, Uni defeated the Sabers in JV action 3-0 thanks to a pair of goals by freshman Emma Coverdill and one by sophomore Katie Buzard. Next up: Uni will visit Class AA Urbana on Tuesday, April 1.
Spring Is In The Air The weather finally turned mild on Thursday, March 13, and students all over campus could be seen in the early stages of spring fever. Here at Uni, freshman Katayun Salehi took advantage of the hospitable temperatures to find a place outside to study. Date: 03/13/2008 The weather finally turned mild on Thursday, March 13, and students all over campus could be seen in the early stages of spring fever. Here at Uni, freshman Katayun Salehi took advantage of the hospitable temperatures to find a place outside to study. Spring is on most people's minds around here. Friday, March 14, is the final day of Uni's third quarter, but more importantly, from the perspective of tired students and faculty alike, it's the last day before a much-needed spring break. The University of Illinois will be on the same schedule, which means Champaign-Urbana will be quieter than usual for those who will spend the break in town. When school resumes on Monday, March 24, only nine weeks will remain before the second semester ends on May 23. In the meantime, here are a few dates to remember: spring play, April 3-5; Spring Fling, April 12; Big Show, May 9-10; and prom, May 17. Did we leave anything out? Oh yeah, graduation, May 31!
UFU Benefit: Let's Dance! Local rappers Text and 9th Degree perform during their set at last week’s benefit show hosted by United for Uganda. Date: 02/23/2008 Local rappers 9th Degree (left) and Text perform during their set at last week’s benefit show hosted by United for Uganda. The show was held Friday, March 7, at the Independent Media center in Urbana, and ran from 10 p.m. to about 12:30 in the morning. A City of Urbana ordinance allowed for students under 17 to stay at the event past curfew (with parental permission) because the concert was conducted by a nonprofit organization with at least one adult present. The benefit was a great success; UFU raised $380 from admission payments ($6 per person) and T-shirt sales. All of the money will be donated to Come Let’s Dance, a grassroots organization in Uganda dedicated to the rehabilitation and empowerment of former child soldiers. UFU estimates that 50 to 60 people attended the concert, in addition to about 10 musicians. Artists included rappers Cornbread, Text, 9th Degree, and Krukid, all of whom were backed by a full band known as The Sugar Gliders. The evening also featured a performance by the Floor Lovers, an Illinois breakdance group.
Senior Trip '08 Senior T.J. Bozada patiently waits as he gets an airbrushed Superman tattoo (legal and temporary) at the Kalahari Water Park, one of the places he and his classmates went during their class trip this past weekend. Date: 03/02/2008 Senior T.J. Bozada patiently waits as he gets an airbrushed Superman tattoo (legal and temporary) at the Kalahari Water Park, one of the places he and his classmates went during their class trip this past weekend. They left Uni High shortly after lunch Friday. The seniors stayed in condos, about 12 students per suite, where they cooked their own food, hung out, relaxed, and enjoyed some class bonding. Seniors also had a chance to swim and go skiing. They returned Monday. The trip was organized by senior parents and students, with parents serving as chaperones. One senior, however, left late for the trip: Chumar Williams competed Friday night in the Class 2A sectional finals of the IHSA Three-Point Showdown. He went up against seven other sharpshooters at Casey-Westfield High School. If he finished in the top four, he would advance to the state prelims in Peoria. (Junior Jessi Sullivan made it to the state prelims for the girls on Feb. 21.) However, Williams' journey came to an end when four other players grabbed the top spots.

They left Uni High shortly after lunch today. The seniors will stay in condos, about 12 students per suite, where they will cook their own food, hang out, play cards, watch DVDs, and — if past trips are any guide — enjoy a little hot tubbing. Besides just relaxing, the seniors will have a chance to ski and visit a waterpark. They will return on Monday; there is no school that day due to parent-teacher conferences. The trip was organized by senior parents and students, with parents serving as chaperones. One senior, however, will be leaving late for the trip: Chumar Williams is competing tonight in the IHSA Three-Point Showdown. He has reached the Class 2A sectional finals. He will compete against seven other sharpshooters at Casey-Westfield High School. If he finishes among the top four, he will advance to the state prelims next week at the Class 1A and 2A state tournament in Peoria. Junior Jessi Sullivan made it to the state prelims for the girls on Feb. 21. When Williams is finished tonight, chaperone Karl Radnitzer, father of senior Isaac Radnitzer, will drive him to the Dells.

Up All Night Junior Annie Machesky enjoys a spoonful of ice cream at the weekend lock-in sponsored by the Uni student organization United for Uganda. Date: 02/10/2008 Junior Annie Machesky enjoys a spoonful of ice cream at the weekend lock-in sponsored by the Uni student organization United for Uganda. The lock-in took place at Uni High from 9 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday. Sophomores were invited to come to a dance in the first-floor hallway from 9 to 11:30, but only juniors and seniors could stay the night. Lock-in tickets cost $20, and all proceeds will go to the grassroots organization Come Let’s Dance, which is dedicated to helping Ugandan children. Uganda is emerging from a civil war that lasted 20 years and pitted the government against a rebel faction known as the Lord's Resistance Army. For most of the civil war, the LRA conscripted children from the Acholi tribe to serve as soldiers, creating a generation of child soldiers and many more whose lives were turned upside down in an attempt to evade the LRA. Students formed UFU two years ago to educate themselves and others about the state of affairs in Uganda and to raise money for that country's "invisible children."

But close losses to Cary-Grove and Hinsdale Central on Saturday dropped the team out of title contention.

Date: 02/01/2008 Freshman Lily Smith enjoys a walk around campus on Friday's highly anticipated snow day. The 6 to 8 inches that fell allowed students to take the day off and enjoy many fun winter activities such as sledding, which many a Uni student participated in at hills such as those in the Orchard Downs neighborhood. This is Uni's second day off due to weather in the 2007- 08 school year. The snow day also cut short Spirit Week '08. Nevertheless, three basketball games between Uni and Normal Calvary Baptist were played Friday at Kenney Gym. The varsity girls celebrated Senior Night with a 70-54 victory, raising their record to 12-12, 9-3 as they head into the playoffs Monday. The boys JV fell short in a dramatic comeback attempt, but the boys varsity won 68-53, improving to 17-5, 7-1. "We had some great turnouts at events this year, and I hope that everyone had a great time," Student Council executive president Micah Berman said. "School spirit is about rallying around our athletic teams, but also about bonding by doing fun things together and creating unity."

It was an even bigger night for Renner, who became the all-time leading scorer in Uni boys basketball history. The 6-foot guard/forward broke the record with 1 minute, 31 seconds left in the first half, reaching 1,373 points on a layup, surpassing the previous record of 1,372 set by his brother Al from 2003 to 2006.

Senior Mike Renner scored 21 points in the contest to close within 3 of tying the Uni boys career scoring record of 1,372 points, which his brother Al set from 2003 to 2006. The 6-foot guard/forward will have a chance to break the boys scoring record on Thursday when Uni hosts Decatur Lutheran at Kenney Gym. The Illineks are on a hot streak, with four wins in a row. On Saturday, Uni beat a tough Fisher team 71-60 on the road. The victory avenged Fisher's 60-42 win over Uni two weeks earlier in the third-place game of the Hayden's Classic holiday tourney, when Renner was unable to play because of a stomach flu. "We played back-to-back very tough opponents, and we played them physical," coach Joel Beesley said after the PBL game. "We’ve been working to play more physical and aggressive, and I’m very proud of these guys. It shows that we can play with some of the better teams in the area and succeed."
