From subbies to seniors: A tribute to the Class of 2013

Much has happened since the class of 2013 first passed through the doorways of Uni in 2008. As the seniors have now graduated, we at the Gargoyle would like to recognize them. Here, we look back at the last five years and present to you a selection of small moments and milestones.

Checking in with Ms. Warren-Grice

After her first year at Uni, assistant director Ms. Warren-Grice has been at work to better Uni's climate and get to know students. I got a chance to learn about her experience and new hopes she has for the school.

Roving Reporter: School elections

For this installment of the Roving Reporter we asked students for their thoughts on the revised student elections policy. This spring, candidates were required to give speeches, and students had to attend the speeches in order to vote.

Stressed and Obsessed Part 5: The effects of stress on student life

Earlier this semester, the Online Gargoyle asked students to evaluate Uni’s climate and their own stress levels and we ended up with some startling results. In the last several months, much has been made of what, if anything, needs to change about Uni to make it a universally supportive environment. In the following weeks, the Gargoyle will delve into stress and climate at Uni and present our findings and opinions.

Stressed and Obsessed Part 2: Where stress starts

From subbies to seniors, Uni students are clearly a stressed out group. When and why this stress starts, though, are difficult questions to answer. It seems that students begin feeling stressed even before stepping foot into Uni. As part of our series on climate and stress at Uni, in this article we explore the beginnings of stress in Uni students.

Stressed and Obsessed Part 3: What causes stress?

After discussing where stress starts and the pressure that students feel when coming to Uni, it is important to explore what ongoing stressors pervade the student body as a whole. The data from our student survey revealed some possible causes of stress for Uni students, such as self-motivation and willingness to excel in academics and extracurricular activities.

Liabilities at Uni: the summer Habitat trip and other events

On Feb. 5, Bob Coverdill, parent of alums Drew and Emma and longtime sponsor of a summer Habitat for Humanity trip to Jonestown, MS, shocked many in the Uni community when he announced via Facebook that Uni will be severing its ties with the trip this summer. This change is one of many that will be affecting Uni and Uni events due to a crackdown by the University of Illinois' Risk Management Office.

Looking at the logo: Is it time for a change of font?

Recently, the University of Illinois Student Senate created a contest for students to submit designs for the new logo for the university. Students can submit their designs to the Facebook page of the student group Campus Spirit Revival, and then vote for their favorite designs at vote.illinois.edu. Do we need a logo contest at Uni?

MOOCs: coming to a Uni near you?

In the past five years, online educational resources have become abundant with the rise of MOOCs (massive online open courses) and Khan Academy. Although these services are still novelties, Uni is already thinking of ways to make use of them and their models.

"Use your gifts and talents to make the world a better place": A Profile of Kate Schrepfer

Alumni Kate Schrepher wants to encourage Uni students to put their talents into teaching. When Gargoyle Editor Sierra Maniates-Selvin sat down to talk to her, it was easy to see that Schrepfer's enthusiasm for education rivals the fervor of even our most passionate Uni teachers.

Twins, teachers and teddy bears: How to dress for Spirit Week 2013

Prepare to start seeing double, have music blasted between passing periods, and for school spirit to abound because Spirit Week 2013 is next week, Jan. 14-18. The five-day long school spirit extravaganza kicks off with PJ day, followed by Twin Day, "Holi"day, Teacher Day, and Class Colors Day. Unlike previous years, there will be no Spirit Week assembly. Instead, students will have to be generate spirit on their own, and be thankful for one less mandatory assembly.

Volunteering opportunities: What you can do to help during the winter season

Winter break is the perfect time to start (or continue) volunteering or donating to any or the various organizations around Champaign-Urbana. Gargoyle editors Sierra Maniates-Selvin and Kathryn Powell explored a few of these opportunities.
