Spirit Week, held annually as a week-long event to boost the school's spirit and encourage students to come to games and support their peers, will be held this year during the week of Jan. 23-27. This year there will be changes to the standard Spirit Week: Coaches vs. Cancer Day and no day to go au naturel (Nerd Day).

This year, Spirit Week events include Retro Day, Twin Day, and the traditional Pajama Day, just to name a few.

Preview of 2012 Spirit Week

Monday

Starting off Spirit Week is Coaches vs. Cancer, which will be an all-day affair spearheaded by Athletic Director Sally Walker.

On Monday Jan. 23, each PE class will watch a video to help raise awareness of cancer and discuss how it affects the community. During Uni Period, a panel of University of Illinois cancer researchers will hold an assembly to educate the student body about their experiences in cancer research and answer questions. The day will culminate with a pizza party thrown by the Booster Club in Kenney Gym before our varsity boys and girls basketball teams play Buckley Christ Lutheran.

All money raised on Jan. 23 will go towards Coaches vs. Cancer, including a fundraising event of Coaches vs. Cancer T-shirts. If you have already bought a t-shirt, be sure to wear it on this day. If not, you can still support the cause by wearing black to match this year's Coaches vs. Cancer t-shirts.

Game: The boys and girls varsity basketball will play Buckley Christ Lutheran at Kenney Gym at 6PM and 7:15PM respectively.

Tuesday

Current juniors Veronika Sowers and Ariana Kamberelis, and current sophomore Mary Evans Dickerson pose for the camera as triplets on 2011's twin day (click to enlarge).

Tuesday is for "twos-day" — a day to find your look-alike or to create one by dressing alike. Tuesday is Twin Day, so find that friend, teacher, or sibling who shares a striking resemblance to you or possesses a similar wardrobe.

Game: Subbie Boys' Basketball will play St. Jonh's Lutheran at 6PM in Champaign.

Wednesday

All most people want to do by the middle of the week is sleep in. Luckily, Wednesday will be Pajama day, so show off your softest pajama pants, your coziest sweatshirt, and your cutest fuzzy slippers. If you wish, you can even bring a warm blanket and a cuddly stuffed animal. You won't be hesitant about coming to school on a Wednesday like this!

Game: Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity will play Heritage High School in a home game 6-7:30PM.

Thursday

Current seniors Marina Shah, Sydney Muchnik, and Sarah Yockey show off their retro hairstyles (click to enlarge).

Thursday means that it is time for Retro Day. This is the day to travel back into the world of Madonna, Michael Jackson, and leg warmers, and to show that you can rock the neon colors and wild hairstyles. Prove your individuality by busting out your retro style. There might even be some themed music during passing period to get you into the time period.

Game: Girls Varsity Basketball will play Decatur Christian at 6PM in Decatur.

Friday

The Class of 2013 is dressed brightly in red as they compete in a tug-of-war game at the 2011 Spirit Olympics (click to enlarge).

Finish off the week in a spirited way by donning your class color. Seniors will look delightful in blue, juniors are entitled to the color orange, sophomores will be dashing in lime green, freshmen can strut their stuff in black, subbies will wear red, and teachers will be decked out in yellow. And, despite talk of cancelling the Spirit Week Olympics, it will indeed occur during Uni Period, so come prepared to fight for your class's honor.

Game: Boys' Varsity and Junior Varsity will play Decatur Christian 6-7:30PM in Decatur.

On Wednesday, the girl's JV and varsity teams will be playing at home against Heritage. It's senior night that night. On Thursday, they will be playing in Decatur against Decatur Christian.
