That "Old Hollywood" style: A guide to prom girl fashion

While we would love nothing more than to advise on you what kinds of flapper-esque dresses to wear on your special night, we realize that would be silly. Most girls have already gotten their dresses, or if not, they have an idea in mind, and their fantasy dress most likely does not include pantaloons, harem pants, or ultra draped dresses that resembles Eleni's personal favorite designer from the era, Paul Poiret. So, in lieu of our acknowledgment, you get to hear about accessories!

1. Headgear
The 1920s, when Old Hollywood really kicked into gear, were all about awesome short hair. But obviously some of us have long hair and probably won't be trading it in for a bob just for prom. Luckily, that doesn't mean you can't still add a touch of the era to your head. Try some kind of decadent head piece, such as a beaded or braided head wrap or a something with a peacock feather. Urban Outfitters has a nice selection of vintage-style hair attire. For a more modernized version of the looks, try something like this this.

2. Necklaces
Our personal pick would be for you to trade in a classic pendent for something long and flowing, or better yet, wear both! For the daring girl, layering up your jewels is a modern and more personalized touch, not to mention really fun. But if you prefer to stick to the classics, Grace Kelly always sported pearls. Whatever you choose, just make sure your headband doesn't clash. If you go daring on the hair, it will draw attention, and a longer necklace might be better so you don't look vulgar.

3. A BIG Ring
Remember that song, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend"? Well, you don't need to wear diamonds on prom night, but it does capture Hollywood glamor. Find a rather chunky ring, but be sure it's just a single one; stacking rings are too modern. Try Claire's, raiding your mom's jewelry box, or for the most authentic piece, go check out local vintage stores and bargain hunt!

4. Heels
Now, we really don't want to get into the debate of flats versus heels, but when it comes to glamor of the '20s and '30s, heels were the way you went, unless you were actually a ballerina. Even Dorothy, of "Wizard of Oz" fame, had a slight heel on those red shoes. But in bear mind, the early years of Old Hollywood coincided with the Jazz Age, and people were avid dancers. The heels the girls wore were not stilettos, so keeps those inches sensible!

5. Canteen Purse or Beaded Clutch
Naturally, you'll be needing a purse on prom night to hold your camera, wallet, and sundry other items, but instead of carrying a chunkier bag, trade it in for something chic, playful, and petite. Try not to get one of the satin-only-pastel-colored clutches; they are not Old Hollywood glam. But nothing screams luxury like intricate beads, and you can often find these bags for under $20 at a place like T.J. Maxx, or check out local vintage store Dandelion for something that could actually be authentic 1930s beadwork.

6. Faux Fur
Don't wear a shawl or jacket on top of your dress, add fur for an older touch. It might be difficult to find a fur throw, but if you can — and it's a reasonable price — it will be well worth it. Plus, it will add a unique touch to your dress and overall ensemble. Oh, did we mention how nice and fuzzy faux fur is? If you got to post-prom, it will keep you nice and warm, and it will provide some comfort if you snooze on the gritty Illini Union couches.
