Chess: Uni remains perfect with two wins over Notre Dame de La Salette

URBANA — Uni continued its chess season Thursday without missing a step. Two victories over Notre Dame de La Salette improved the team's record to 4-0 overall in the East Central Illinois Chess League.

The matches were held in the Siebel Center for Computer Science across the street from Uni, a change of scenery from the typical venue of Mahomet-Seymour High School. Uni plans to host the rest of the intraleague matches at the Siebel Center.

In the first round, Uni completed a 58-0 sweep of La Salette. Freshman George Ruan played first board, followed by fellow freshman Max Sigalov, sophomore Kathy Qiu, seniors Daniel Cheng and Danny Ge, and junior Michael Meyer on Boards 2 through 6, respectively. (The games on Boards 1 through 6 are worth 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, and 7 points, respectively).

The second round went nearly as smoothly, with Uni overcoming La Salette 54-4 after Ge finished the last game of the day with a draw.

Next for Uni are interleague matches against Charleston and Heyworth on Nov. 12 at Mahomet.
