URBANA — Bummed about not having the Culture Fair this year?
Students for a Better World has the solution for you!
The club, dedicated to volunteering for the community with such projects as pasta dinners and community bike rides, originally had plans to put on a Halloween dance.
But after many conflicts and ideas thrown around, S4BW crafted an alternative plan to bring Uni its own homecoming, complete with football.
The festivities will start Saturday afternoon with Uni-spirited flag or two-hand touch football games from 4 to 6 at the DCR Soccer Complex (the field where Uni soccer teams usually play), Florida and Lincoln avenues, Urbana.
Then there will be just enough time to get ready and grab dinner before attending the dance.
The homecoming ball will take place from 8 to 11:30 p.m at Uni. Students are invited to bring themselves and their "semiformal" attire to the decked-out second floor for the dance! Wondering what "semi-formal" entails? Girls can show off all their favorite fall dresses. Guys just need a button-down shirt and slacks. Think Spring Fling!
At past Uni dances, there have been complaints about music, but don't let that stop you this time. The homecoming gala will feature a guest DJ, none other than Ben Daniels, Class of 2009.
Worried about all that dancing tiring you out and leaving you thirsty? There will be refreshments served courtesy of S4BW! There will also be tasty food, if you're hungry as well.
Ticket prices will be $5 for individuals and $8 for couples if you buy ahead of time. Members of S4BW will be selling tickets at lunch until Thursday for the discounted prices.
Grab your tickets quickly since the prices will raise to $6 for individuals and $9 for couples at the door. Everyone is welcome to bring a friend! All the proceeds will go to S4BW to help fund future projects.
"A lot of students actually used to go to the dances, and they were lots of fun," said senior Elizabeth Russell, a president of S4BW. "But recently the attendance has gone down, making the dances less than mediocre. We want to make this dance the comeback of fun Uni dances. Everyone should go!"
So come out to play football and dance the night away, all for an excellent cause!
