The Mixtape: Prom '09 edition
Published: Wednesday, May 6, 2009 - 3:48pm
Prom is coming up this Saturday at the Champaign Country Club, and "The Mixtape" is back with its second edition just in time for the big dance. A&E co-editor Sindha Agha has compiled some of her favorite dance tunes for the ultimate prom mix, ranging from Parisian electronic duo Justice to the English duo Simian Mobile Disco, hailing from London. Whether you need a little something to keep you awake after the 5K as you get ready, music to get the dance floor going, or tunes to keep you going at post prom, Sindha's got the mix for you.
1. "Seventeen Years" by Ratatat
Even though electronic music is generally not on my menu, Ratatat and I have had a solid relationship for the past three years. “Seventeen Years” is one of Ratatat’s most energetic tunes and one of my favorites. The beat is impeccable and the melodic embellishments are, as they always are in Ratatat songs, tasteful.
2. "MGMT Remix" by Justice
("Electric Feel" Remix)
There almost isn’t a playlist I can imagine MGMT not fitting on since I am so smitten with the indie duo, but I thought I could get away this time with a Justice remix. Anyway, Justice belongs on any respectable dance mix, so at least one Justice song or remix had to make an appearance. As far as the dance song itself goes, it seems impossible that much could be done to the original "Electric Feel" to funk it up, but Justice somehow made it 10 times more danceable. They dribbled some more synth and made the beat bigger, Justifying (hah! Pun!) the whole thing.
3. "Je Veux Te Voir" by Yelle
Yelle is one cool girl. She stands out to me in the same way M.I.A. does, one of those witty and peculiar females who has recently hit the music scene with such confidence and spectacular style that everyone notices her. Her sound is electro and her lyrics are questionably dirty for a school dance but, hey! It’s in French! So that’s different, right?
4. "Creator" by Santigold
Speaking of bold fashion and eccentricity, Santigold comes up next on my playlist with her undoubtedly weird song “Creator.” The tune starts out with high pitched yelling/cackling that sounds nothing short of some animal’s mating call. The beat drops and sends you straight into the heart of some jungle, shortly followed by the spiraling synthesizer, which sends you off to a lively nightclub. Santigold, of course, pulls it off perfectly.
5. "I Got This Down" by Simian Mobile Disco
To me, Simian Mobile Disco came out of the middle of nowhere. One day I hadn’t heard of them at all, and the next I was obsessing over “I Got This Down” and playing it at every possible second. The song’s addictive; it has repetitive (but not annoying) lyrics that are stuffed with bravado and a booming beat clapping in the background, making it hypnotic and energetic.
6. "Black Panther" by Crystal Castles
“Black Panther” is a beautiful song. Like Ratatat, Crystal Castles have mastered electro and somehow pull out dynamic and complex compositions that maintain a rhythmic pattern, making them danceable. I could rave about Crystal Castles forever for I think the duo is sheer genius. This song is faster paced than “Crime Wave,” another one of my favorites, more melodic, and the beat pops reliably in the background.
7. "Girls Girls" by Dave Wrangler (remix of Jay-Z and the Foals)
NOTE: Click here to listen to the full-length version of this song.
I find this mash-up very surprising; I would never expect to find rapper extraordinaire Jay-Z and indie group the Foals to be mixed into the same song, but it was a clever choice by artist Dave Wrangler. The tempo is incredible, Jay-Z flows so well, and the instrumental (taken from “Balloons” by the Foals) contains one of the catchiest guitar riffs I’ve ever heard.
8. "We Are Your Friends" by Simian Mobile Disco and Justice ("Electric Feel" Remix)
Both Simian Mobile Disco and Justice, dance music maestros, have made appearances in this mix tape already and here they are once again, this time in collaboration. If you’re familiar with both groups even in the least, the idea of them working together is exciting, but nothing compares to actually hearing the fruit of their collaboration, which is “We Are Your Friends.” The tune is funky and the lyrics (“Because we are your friends/ You will never be alone again”) are happy as can be.
9. "Two Weeks of Hip Hop (Dead Prez vs. Grizzly Bear)" by The Hood Internet
ABX (Aaron Brink) and STV SLV (Steve Reidell) have mastered the mash-up, that’s for sure, but when I read “Dead Prez vs. Grizzly Bear” next to this mash-up’s title on The Hood Internet’s Web site, I laughed. I think the ingredients for the “Two Weeks of Hip Hop” concoction may have caught me by surprise almost as much as when the pair mixed Matt & Kim with The Beastie Boys or Kanye West with Wilco. If there’s one thing I’ve learned through exploring The Hood Internet’s mixtapes, though, it’s that they are almost always right. Grizzly Bear and Dead Prez? A mellow, experimental folk indie band and an underground hip-hop group? Yes, it works. Amazingly so.
