Boys & girls track: Distance squad led by Taylor strikes again, Warner hurdles to victory

CHAMPAIGN — Uni runners finished first in four events and had strong showings in several others as the boys and girls teams finished third and fifth respectively in Thursday's meet at St. Thomas More.

For the girls, senior Lizzy Warner won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.52 seconds.

Winning first place on the boys side were sophomore Albert Anastasio with a time of 10:34.74 in the 3,200 run; senior Malcolm Taylor, who clocked in at 2:08.00 in the 800; and the 4x400 relay squad of senior Isaac Chambers, junior Nathan Smith, junior Eric Fritzsche, and Taylor, who ran the event in 3:34.20.

St. Joseph-Ogden finished first on both the boys and the girls side, with 145 and 159 points, respectively.

With 50.5 points, the Uni boys placed third out of six teams, behind SJ-O and STM (74 points). The girls, with 24 points, finished fifth out of five teams, behind SJ-O, STM, Hoopeston, and Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

The small Uni girls contingent competed in seven events. Warner was the only Illinek to win her event, but sophomore Ashley Huddson managed second out of 11 sprinters in the 200 dash, beating out third-place Lauren Jerkovitz of STM by a hundredth of a second with a time of 29.15.

Other strong showings for the girls included Warner’s fourth-place finish in the long jump at 14 feet, 4 inches in a field of 11, and Huddson's fourth-place time in the 400 at 1:08.74.

The boys, meanwhile, flexed their muscles with top-five performances in eight events.

Besides the Illineks' three first-place finishes, they took second and third in the 3,200 (Buck Walsh, 10:52.00; Iain Konigsberg, 10:59.00) in a field of eight runners.

The 4x800 relay team of Taylor, junior Langston Allston-Yeagle, Smith, and Chambers won third place (8:45.66) out of five teams.

Also placing third were senior Kareem Sayegh in the 200 dash (23.68) and the 4x200 relay squad (sophomore Seth Bull, junior Terry Qi, senior Cheng Luo, and Sayegh, 1:43.68).

In the discus, sophomore Warren Skoza placed fifth with a toss of 90 feet, 0 inches.
