Cheers & Jeers: New Year's 2009 edition

Cheers

  • New Year!

    It's 2009!

  • New Prez!

T-minus 11 days and counting. On Nov. 4, Americans put their chips behind Barack Obama, and here's to hoping he'll deliver.

  • Clean Kitchen

With new cabinets, flooring, refrigerators, and a paint job, the kitchen is looking spiffy and clean. And a special thanks to the Doyle family for the generous donations of the cabinets and refrigerators.

  • Finally Over

With finals out of the way before break, students and teachers could have a relaxing winter break without school work hanging over their heads.

  • One Down, One To Go!

Congratulations, students and faculty! We survived a whole semester. Just one more till summer. It'll be here before you know it …

  • Kick Back, Relax, And Enjoy The Show

With most college admissions deadlines past, seniors can finally take a deep breath.

  • Spirit Week

Spirit Week begins on Monday, and it's a great excuse to dress up. It's an even better excuse to get out of classes for the Spirit Week assembly on Friday, which by the way is rumored to be awesome.

  • Agora Days

Uni's annual break from its usual classes is just five weeks away. With course proposals well underway and new policies set in place, we're eagerly anticipating Agora Days '09.

  • On Track For Success

Uni boys cross country capped this past season with a fourth-place finish at the IHSA Class 1A state meet. With track season starting up in just over a week, we can't wait to see what's in store. Senior Malcolm Taylor placed second in the finals of the 400-meter dash last year at the state meet, and he's coming back for more.

  • Strangers With Clipboards

With the facility usage study in progress, you may see some strange faces around Uni. We're looking forward to sharing and hearing everybody else's ideas about improving school facilities.

  • Writing History

Eight Uni freshmen have been published in Illinois History magazine for their essays on the theme of women in the state's history.

  • Optimism

We realized when writing this that there were so many things to cheer about. What a great way to kickoff the new year. Cheers!

Jeers

  • End Of Winter Break

    Need we say more?

  • Recession Woes

The unemployment rate hit a 16-year high on Friday at 7.2 percent. With jobs evaporating, consumer confidence low, and a poor holiday retail season, the economy is hurting in more ways than one.

  • The Waiting Game

With most admissions decisions not due till almost April, don't be surprised to see seniors tearing their hair out in anguish.

  • Financial Aid

FAFSA, CSS, FASTWEB, IRS, what? With different forms, formulas, and policies for each school, financial aid has become so complicated and time consuming that people should get paid for the trouble of even applying.

  • Fake Winter

Just over this winter break, we had flurries, freezing rain, thunderstorms, tornado warnings, flash flood warnings, and horror-movie-quality fog. We just want our blizzard and our snow day already! Is that really too much to ask for?

  • Grades

Donald Trump actually ripped "You're fired!" off from Uni parents' "You're grounded!"

  • SDS

It's the fantastic software that does grades, scheduling, and manages student info. From what we've overheard from teachers (some of which shouldn't be repeated in polite company), it is responsible for all kinds of problems.
