Cheers & Jeers: December '08 edition

Cheers

  • Baby

So about two years ago Uni had its own baby boom among the staff (and thankfully not among the students). And now that the children have been born, we're all adoring them. But another one is to come! College counselor Lisa Micele has announced that she is expecting again. Congratulations!

  • School Spirit

Uni's school spirit tees are finally in. Students can purchase the shirts to get in free at any Uni High home sporting event, so there are bound to be more fans and thus more support for our superb athletics. Great idea StudCo!

  • First Snow

So it might have been a little wet, and it might've caused you to be extremely late to your first-period class Monday due to the fact that you had to go 10 mph under the speed limit, but nonetheless it made for a glorious frost over Champaign-Urbana. Winter is officially here, and that means winter formal and holiday treats are just around the corner.

  • Renovated Kitchen

Thanks to the generosity of junior Jared Doyle's father and uncle, we now have a spiffy-looking kitchen. And there's more to come, including a retiled floor. Once everything is done, let's try to keep it looking good.

  • Student Services Office

Applications are being turned in, and as seniors we have been flooding the SSO with our school report forms. Thankfully the SSO has managed to stay sane and actually file all 57 students' college information. What would we do without them?

  • Swimmer of the Year

Junior Lisa Boyce capped an amazing first season of competing for the Uni swim team by being named The News-Gazette's Swimmer of the Year. We can't wait to see what she does for an encore!

  • Senior Delux Package

How excited are we to purchase the nearly $300 graduation "Delux Package" for graduation, which includes your own personalized stationery and keychain!? How can you think of ordering a simple cap and gown? This is supposed to be a memorable part of our lives, so it's great that we can properly document it with expensive "personalized" bric-a-brac.

  • The Elevator is Open

Any bets on how long this one will last?

  • StudProd

This year's six plays are looking to be hilarious. The performances are tonight and Saturday night at 7:30, and if the cast's purple superhero shirts aren't exciting enough for you, then we don't know what would be!

Jeers

  • Dangerous Road Conditions

With the first snow came icy roads and tragic accidents. On Monday morning, a teacher at Garden Hills Elementary School in Champaign, Venita Hubbard, was killed after she lost control of her car on her way to work. The accident was due to the icy conditions, authorities said.

  • Finals

Semester finals are right around the corner. More like less than two weeks away. This means that our false sense of having no work during Thanksgiving break was, well, false. Start getting to work; otherwise, you know you will be overwhelmingly tired and sleepless sooner than you think.

  • Missing Coats

If your coat/sweater/any other piece of clothing that you hang up on your locker door is knocked onto the floor by a rowdy passerby, don't expect to see it (clean) any time soon. All outerwear that is not securely hung up inside a locker is being brought to the kitchen for lost and found.

  • Tardies

With the recent snowfall beginning to melt, the roads have gotten slippery, and it doesn't seem like anyone can drive anymore. You're better safe than sorry, but it's really adding toward our tardy-service hours.

  • Senior Wills

It's really fun to write out our senior wills, thinking up witty adjectives to describe ourselves and funny inside jokes that we have with underclassmen. What's not fun is trying to get everything turned in to the yearbook staff on time. There are a million papers, tests, and projects due (not to mention finals preparation), so we're a little stressed out! Some people haven't even turned in their senior photo, and that was due months ago. We're hoping yearbook doesn't get too mad at us if our stuff is a little late!

  • PSAT Scores

PSAT scores have been returned, and for a while it was all anyone could talk about. Parents were frantic and juniors and sophomores were comparing scores. The hype has died down a little, but it still is a shock for us seniors to realize that college is just around the corner. We've all put up with it, guys. Take a deep breath and realize you still have a million more tries.
