URBANA — Students For a Better World’s Boomerang Bike Ride took place April 26, making this the third bike ride the club has organized in a year.
Proceeds from the ride were given to A Women’s Fund , an organization that provides services and shelter for women suffering from sexual assault and domestic violence.
With three courses available of different lengths — 16, 45, and 60 miles — the race attracted a wide variety of riders and raised $450.
The three bike rides have raised a total of $1,186.
Twenty people participated in this last bike ride. A team of 14 from The Illini 4000, college students who bike cross country to raise money for cancer research, took the 60-mile route. The other six participants took the 45-mile route.
Uni freshman Buck Walsh was among the six riders who went on the 45-mile route.
Even though this bike ride was aimed toward kids, none showed up.
“There weren't any kids, which was sort of disappointing because we spent awhile copying flyers so every elementary school kid would go home with one,” said S4BW vice president junior Rachel Hyman.
Overall, however, this bike ride was one of the group's more successful ones. Last fall's ride raised $535, while last spring's ride raised $201.
“I think the ride went great!” said senior S4BW president Eunice How. “The weather was wonderful, with no rain, thankfully, and we got more than enough food donated.”
According to How, of the three bike rides S4BW has held, this past bike ride received the most food donations by far. This allowed for a vast supply of bread products and fruit at both the registration point and the rest stop for the riders.
With the success of these last three bike rides, the future looks bright for the fundraiser.
Said Hyman: “I'm planning to continue the rides next year, but we'll probably target serious cyclists more than kids, because that's who we've had success with.”
