The magic of a card game

Lately, I have not been able to step into the lounge without seeing an array of strange cards littered across the table. Well, maybe not littered. There is a definite order to the layout of these cards and there are people behind them, picking them up and placing them down with authority. These cards belong to a collectible card game called Magic: The Gathering.

Magic and I have a somewhat sparse history. Apparently, the game was introduced in 1993 to widespread critical acclaim. I had some friends in fifth grade who played, but I never owned any cards myself. I had never encountered another Magic card before then or ever since, until now.

The recent explosion of Magic's popularity at Uni has piqued my interest, which leads me to ask: Why had it not struck sooner? Everyone that I know who plays has been doing so since they were in grade school. Occasionally, some played in private with friends, but there has never been a widespread trend like there is now.

Does the inherent nerdiness of a fantasy role-playing card game deter players from publicly declaring their enthusiasm? While Uni seems to be more accepting of supposedly “nerdy” activities than other schools, the students don’t exactly flaunt their nerdiness, either. I think this social preconception is rather unfortunate, as the game looks to be very fun.

It is good to see that many Uni students have embraced Magic and are having a great time. I am even making an effort to learn how to play, making the school day all the more bearable.

Magic: an experience like no other

When two wizards are locked in a battle to the death there is simply nothing comparable. The mystical energies unleashed in such Magic duels have rent worlds, and friendships, apart. Yet the popularity of the game persists despite heartbreak and derision; perhaps it's something those who don't play, who haven't yet delved into the arcane, can never understand.
