The best of 2012: Albums

For Gargoyle Editor Sierra Maniates-Selvin, 2012 was a great year for discovering new music, and finding new albums from her favorite bands. Here are some of her favorite listens of the year.

New joys to the world: Christmas music you've probably never heard

With Christmas just around the corner, Christmas music has promptly re-emerged everywhere by filling the atmosphere with the yearly anticipation that comes with the holidays. For some, hearing the same tunes too many times and in too many places can be a bit tiring. Here OG reporter Alice Chang has collected a few albums with slightly different twists on the idea of Christmas music.

Album review: One Direction's "Take Me Home" is just one more boring pop album

Last month, the boy band One Direction released it's newest album "Take Me Home". Gargoyle Reporter Coleman Solis's recommendation: Unless you want another boring pop album, it's not worth your time.

Mumford and Sons "Babel" : An amazing second album proves the "sophomore slump" is far from inevitable.

Many bands second albums cannot live up to the glory of their first. This is not true however for Mumford and Son's sophomore album "Babel". With great individual tracks that work well together as a complete album, this is an album any indie-folk fan will love.

Album Review: Grizzly Bear's "Shields" shows why they're Pygmalion's headlining band

Grizzly Bear is a band you may not have heard of, but as the headliner of the local Pygmalion Festival, they may be your new favorite. You should check out their new album "Shields" if you like indie or alternative music.

In order to shine the spotlight on Uni's artistically talented community, theater director Chris Guyotte, music teacher Rick Murphy, and art teacher Lisa Evans will hold "Arts in the Attic," a celebration of the arts. It will take place in the North and South Attics April 11 from 7-9 p.m.

Freshman Thea Kammerling is one of the talented musical students at Uni, but rather than learning a conventional instrument, she decided to master her skills as harpist.

Common visits the University of Illinois

Common, known as one of the most conscious and well-respected rappers, is coming to the University of Illinois this Wednesday. The Chicago rapper will be talking about his recently released memoirs.

If It Ain't Baroque Don't Fix it: Uni High Madrigals

The season of song is here again and Gargoyle reporter Thomas Lawless has the latest on Uni's most popular choral group.

CD Review: The Red Hot Chili Peppers, "I'm With You."

After a five-year recording hiatus, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are back with a new guitarist and their tenth studio album, I'm With You. While the album is low-quality overall, marked especially by the loss of guitarist John Frusciante and his style, there are several songs that make I'm With You worthwhile.

Four Uni Students Selected for IMEA All-State

This year, four Uni students were selected to go to the IMEA All-State Conference. Next month they'll be performing with top high school musicians from around the state in Peoria.

What's Up With Music

I've always been a critic of music. It has presented itself to me as something that deserves to be investigated. As a critic, I've always felt that today's music industry has been slipping in comparison to the golden days of rock and roll back in the '60s and '70s with the glory of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. But it seems like recently that has started to change.

CD review: The National's "High Violet" is an instant classic

The National's new album, "High Violet," is one of the most highly anticipated musical releases of 2010. Melancholy and sweet, the tone is subdued and salient in a way never before heard from the Brooklyn rockers. Check inside to see what Katy Metcalf has to say about it.

Column: Why I love Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has swarmed the media lately. She's winning award after award and is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable people in the country, with the fan base to prove it. Not everyone thinks this country star is something special, though. Maritza Mestre defends why she loves Taylor Swift.

A case for country

I can't count the number of times I've heard a person describe his/her music taste as "Anything but Country."
