Big Show '10 diary: I did it! With help …

URBANA — Production No. 16 at Uni High: complete.

Wait, 16? How did that happen? How have I been in four different Big Shows?

And how did I direct Big Show 2010 without completely messing everything up?!?!?

Actually, that last question shouldn't be so incredulously punctuated. I had two fantastic, hilarious co-directors to keep me in check, and 10 other enthusiastic cast members to keep me laughing. (See below for cast list.)

We had history teacher Chris Butler to give us ideas and make sure we were on task, senior Tianna Pittenger to be in charge of the set and freshman Alex Valdez to help move it, junior Adam Joseph to give us lights and speakers, and senior Andrew LaPointe to make sure our videos played.

Of course, we also had senior Tej Chajed, without whom Big Show would have failed. He filmed most of our videos and edited all of them. In return, we gave him a "throne" during the performances: a special padded seat in the front row.

Those are what I remember most. (The performances, not padded chairs.) In terms of rehearsals, I can hardly remember anything, because performances are when everything funny gets promoted to a new level of hilarity, and everyone has a great time. Even before the show starts, we're cracking jokes and wishing we had thought of them sooner. ("Wouldn't it be funny to put that in Big Show?")

This year, we even had dance parties and puppet shows in the North Attic just minutes before the audience piled in.

So, yes, sometimes directing Big Show was a little bit stressful, but the fun overbearingly outweighs any tiny gripes I could ever have about this fabulous show.
