  • Movie Review: "The Great Gatsby" tries too hard but gets there in the end

    May 16 – 12:22 pm

"The Great Gatsby" stays wonderfully close to the book, with moments of greatness. However, most of it felt like it tried too hard to be artistic and deep, and many times it felt nothing like the 1920s when the movie takes place. A&E Editor Sierra Maniates-Selvin recommends that you see the movie, but wait until it comes out on DVD.

  • Gargoyle artist showcase: Celia Faux

    Apr 17 – 12:35 pm

Many students play clarinet or violin, but Celia Faux's talents are less represented at Uni. Faux is an accordion player with an auditory (like a photographic) memory, who plays around town along with composing her own music. This Gargoyle artist showcase features a Q&A with Faux along with recordings of her music.

  • Album review: "Comedown Machine" is the best Strokes album in ten years

    Apr 4 – 12:10 pm

Though it has some flaws, "Comedown Machine" is a step in the right direction for the creatively struggling Strokes.

  • Dinner and a show: "Did he say...Murder?" thespian fundraiser

    Feb 6 – 12:49 pm

The Uni High Thespians held a fundraiser on Feb. 2, but this was not the ordinary pizza sale fundraiser. This fundraiser was an interactive murder mystery dinner where the audience had to figure out who the murderer was by interacting with the suspects. OG editor and consulting detective Kathryn Powell decided to lend a hand in solving the murder of Mr. Price.

  • "Warm Bodies": A twisted tale of true love

    Feb 4 – 1:26 pm

Overall, "Warm Bodies" is a decent movie. It's a good film to watch if you're bored, but don't go into the theater expecting an intense or gory action movie.

Film review: "Les Miserables" is an emotional journey you won't want to miss.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is an expected success

Being a huge fan of both J.R.R Tolkein's books and Peter Jackson's films, OG editor Kathryn Powell was quite excited to review "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Here is her take on the movie that has joined the ranks of greatness alongside the "Lord of the Rings" series.

Film review: Lincoln replaces action with dialogue and gets away with it

"Lincoln" was a long movie with very little action, but the character of Lincoln was enough to keep the movie very interesting and entertaining.

The best of 2012: Albums

For Gargoyle Editor Sierra Maniates-Selvin, 2012 was a great year for discovering new music, and finding new albums from her favorite bands. Here are some of her favorite listens of the year.

New joys to the world: Christmas music you've probably never heard

With Christmas just around the corner, Christmas music has promptly re-emerged everywhere by filling the atmosphere with the yearly anticipation that comes with the holidays. For some, hearing the same tunes too many times and in too many places can be a bit tiring. Here OG reporter Alice Chang has collected a few albums with slightly different twists on the idea of Christmas music.

Album review: One Direction's "Take Me Home" is just one more boring pop album

Last month, the boy band One Direction released it's newest album "Take Me Home". Gargoyle Reporter Coleman Solis's recommendation: Unless you want another boring pop album, it's not worth your time.

Gargoyle guide to the week in entertainment, Oct. 4-11

Midterm, college applications, fall, what can I say? Pop culture makes another feeble attempt this week in video games, with mediocre releases "advancing the technology" in rap and basketball games , but succeeds fantastically in the new book movie "It's a Funny Story" alongside the clever "Life As We Know It." Check inside for more.

Gargoyle guide to the week in entertainment, Sept. 27-Oct 2

If you have anything resembling free time left, we applaud you. however, despite our packed schedules, we're making time this weekend to see the curious new horror film "Let Me In," with a (hopefully) less sugary take on vampire relationships. The rest of the field is pretty bland however, with a disappointing new Sufjan Stevens release, and no games of particular merit. Check inside for more.
