Girls swimming: Boyce and Nelson off to state

Junior Lisa Boyce and freshman Milee Nelson broke a 14-year drought last weekend for Uni girls swimming when they qualified for the IHSA state meet. Boyce won the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Nelson took the 500 free. They will compete in Friday's state prelims and hope to advance to Saturday's championship finals.

Chambers named Coca-Cola Scholars Program semifinalist

Isaac Chambers was been selected as a semifinalist in the 2008-09 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. Nearly 75,000 students applied this year, and only 2,100 have reached this stage. A total of 250 Coca-Cola Scholars will be chosen by mid-February. Fifty of them will receive awards of $20,000 each, while the remaining 200 will each receive $10,000 awards.

Subfreshman musician honored at state contest

Chelsea Edwards, a member of the Class of 2013, earned honorable mention at Saturday's Illinois State Music Teachers Association's junior high state piano competition at Wheaton College. She performed pieces by Haydn, Chopin, and Turina. She advanced to the state contest after receiving one of the two top scores at the district competition at Millikin University.

Can Uni's star basketballers live up to this 5-year-old?

As sort of a tipoff to the basketball season, which begins tonight at Kenney Gym for the varsity girls team against Atwood-Hammond, I thought I would create a mini-goal for all of Uni's basketballers:

By the end of the season, you should be able to dribble the ball as well as a certain 5-year-old girl.
