Column: It's closed again …

Friday's closing of the elevator to students for the rest of the school year caught a lot of people by surprise, including Nancy Tang. "There's a bigger picture that we need to look at because this isn't just about the elevator," she writes. "It's really about communication between us and our administration. Someone needs to speak up for the student body and mediate between the two."

"We all had to juggle like mad!" The aftermath of illness at Uni

When students lined up in the kitchen Tuesday morning to receive H1N1 flu shots, the scene was a reminder of what Uni went through in late October, when scores were absent due to sickness. Though the rampant absences finally subsided by the beginning of this month, the effects are still being felt as students and faculty alike play catch-up.

CD review: Snide commentary, sweet synth yield solid follow-up from The Swimmers

The Swimmers, an indie rock band from Philadelphia, released their new album "People Are Soft" earlier this month. Katy Metcalf describes it as "incredibly cohesive in its sound and production … a fantastically solid listen." Check inside to see why.

"This is your lesson": Elevator off-limits to students for rest of school year

In the past, student misbehavior has caused Uni Assistant Director Sue Kovacs to close the elevator for weeks at a time, but today she was finally driven off the edge and closed the elevator to students for the rest of the school year. Check inside for more about the decision that had the school buzzing this afternoon.

Girls basketball: Blue, Hoyer lead Illineks to victory in season opener

Sophomore Jamie Blue picked up where she left off from her spectacular freshman season by recording a triple-double in Uni's 2009-10 debut Thursday night. Freshman Emma Hoyer proved that she will be a force to be reckoned as well, adding a double-double and leading the team in both points and rebounds.

What are your plans for Thanksgiving break?

Column: "New Moon" mania

With "New Moon" opening in theaters Friday, there's no escaping the hype about Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. And that's just fine with Eleni Yannelis. "The original 'Twilight' novel made the New York Times' Best Sellers list, so I am not alone in my fascination with a teenage girl and her undead love interest who happens to be a 'vegetarian' vampire who sparkles in sunlight."

I get it now

Up until now, I don't think Thanksgiving has ever had a true meaning to me. Every year it entailed the same kind of thing: delicious food and a few days off from school.

"This is definitely a new one": Obscene graffiti removed from north stairwell

The graffiti was found near the door that leads to the North Attic. This morning, Assistant Director Sue Kovacs sent a schoolwide e-mail addressing the incident. She advised whoever was responsible that there will be consequences and that a disciplinary hearing would be held if they are caught. Check inside to learn more.

The Uni food experience — quirky but tasty

I like food. I like the texture, the smell, but most of all, I like the variety. I like to try new things and especially new restaurants. Being at a school with a student kitchen and being on a campus with a massive number of eateries ensures that we have limitless dining options.

Girls basketball preview '10: New coach, new team look to make some noise this season

The girls varsity basketball season begins Thursday night with a road game against Atwood-Hammond. Coming off a successful 16-9 season, the Illineks will sport a new look with first-year head coach Jeff Blue and captains Michelle Wong, Rachel Harmon, and Jamie Blue.

Get a hobby

Something that I think everyone needs is a hobby. Nothing beats a stressful day at Uni like taking part in something that you enjoy. Whether you like playing sports or video games, reading, knitting, or even collecting stamps, all are good ways to relieve some stress and anger.

Saving the Earth, one apple core at a time

You may have noticed the small green bins showing up around the school. They're part of the Green Club's new Uni compost system. Students can discard their biodegradable items in the bins and, eventually, the waste can be used as compost. It's the club's latest effort to make Uni a greener place.
