2009-2010 Makino Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence Application Form

Name: Dave Stone

One Sentence Description of Planned Use of Funds:
Requested Makino funds will pay the cost of attending the June, 2009 U of I FAST3 Five Day Intensive Web Design Workshop (http://www.fast3.uiuc.edu/IWDW/Default.htm).

Project Narrative:
Though I’ve been designing simple web sites and web pages for the past eleven years, I’d like to improve my skills and update my knowledge so that I can more effectively work with higher end web design software packages for the production of my own materials, as well as advise ExploraVision students in the use of higher end software packages during the second round of competition.

This workshop will allow me to establish background in Dreamweaver CS4, Microsoft Expression Web 2, and Photoshop CS4. I’m comfortable with HTML, though my familiarity can always improve, and I have minimal knowledge of CSS. I should become familiar with all of these during the workshop. I should be reasonably adept in using the software packages I find most useful by the end of the week.

Long-Term Application and Significance:

Though being largely self-taught has been sufficient, this workshop will be an excellent catalyst in moving me to a much higher level in production of my own class materials, as well as allow me to more effectively advise Uni students in design of independent study and science competition final products.

Amount Requested: $476 to cover the cost of attending the workshop

Time Frame: June 15-19, 2009
