Title of Project: Green Club Compost Bin Project

Green Club, a newly established environmental awareness club, is in the process of making Uni a greener institution through education and awareness activities. During each lunch period organic matter is discarded in the garbage cans, eventually ending up in landfills where much of its potential is wasted.

Green Club would like to purchase three indoor containers for deposition of compostable waste and three outdoor compost bins. Every morning a clearly marked indoor organic waste container will be placed strategically on each floor. After lunch, a volunteer from Green Club will collect the containers, dump their contents into a compost bin (located outdoors on the east side of the school) and clean the indoor container.

How does this program or project enhance the quality of student life at University High School?

Students throughout the school will be made more aware of the importance of disposing of waste in a more ecologically sound way through club publicity and the placement of containers next to currently used garbage cans. This activity will be a key activity in Green Club’s educational outreach. Soil/compost will be made available to Uni community members as it is produced.

How much money are you applying for? $350 to cover the cost of two compost bins, three indoor compost containers and an aeration tool.

What would be the minimum amount of assistance that could provide you with a reasonable start-up for your program or project with students? $200 will cover the cost of one compost bin, three indoor organic waste containers and an aeration tool. We anticipate that a single compost bin will not be sufficient to fully convert meet our school’s compostable waste to a soil ready mixture .

What is the projected time frame of this program or project? The project can begin within a week of arrival of the compost bins, the aeration tool and purchase of the organic waste containers.
