One Sentence Description of Planned Use of Funds:
Requested Stoddard funds will pay the cost of attending a nature photography workshop focusing on arthropod photography (http://www.natureworkshops.com/, http://www.natureworkshops.com/buttersndragons.htm).

Narrative Description:

Uni High’s field biology class has incorporated a photography-based arthropod collection option for the past fifteen years. This small group workshop (maximum of eight students) will be led by renowned professional nature photographer Richard Day. Participants will be introduced to basic lighting, exposure, composition and image critique in a classroom setting on the first morning, followed by extensive photo shooting throughout the day, interspersed with regular critique of images. The remainder of the workshop will be spent in the field, over the camera. As is the nature photography way, each day’s photographing and critiquing activities begin before dawn and continue well through nightfall.

This experience will better allow me to work with students electing the photography-based arthropod collection option and may lead to development of a nature photography class during Agora Days and integration into activities performed in art and multimedia classes.

This proposal meets two of the three goals of the fund outlined in the Stoddard Faculty Support Endowment Fund Application: 1) exploring a new dimension in technology (Goal 2) and 2) support of a professional development opportunity for a Uni faculty member that is not covered by other U of I or Uni High resources (Goal 3).
