Student Activity #2: Alternative
Applications of Selected Genetic Testing Methodologies
This activity will allow you to broaden your knowledge of use
of your selected technology in a variety of different applications,
including tissue typing for organ transplantation, maternity/paternity
testing, evolutionary studies, and early human migration pattern
studies. Begin by reviewing genetic testing methodologies introduced
in the "Genetic
Testing Methodologies Used in Determining Relatedness of Survivors"
document. Please perform the following steps in numerical order.
- Select one of the four biochemical analysis technologies:
HLA typing, mitochondrial DNA analysis, Y chromosome short tandem
repeat analysis, or autosomal short tandem repeat analysis. Perform
a search using only the name of the technology. Don't select
an application of that technology. This will give you a sense
of the multitude of ways in which this technology is currently
being used.
- After developing some background from your first search,
combine the name of the technology and a potential area of application
(e.g. evolution), to see what type of documents you find. Perform
any other searches you believe appropriate.
- Using the information you find, write a document outlining
the following:
- Your selected biochemical technology.
- Different ways in which this technology is being used.
- Manner in which this technology is being used for your selected
applications.
- Findings of scientists in your selected application.
- Anticipated future role of scientific evidence in better
understanding/confirming findings thus far.
- Be certain to include a bibliography of web resources used
in your document. Two different web page citation formats can
be found at http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/~dstone/searchevalandcit.html
.
