CHARLESTON — Junior Tuli Bera won the 55-meter dash Saturday at the Charleston Indoor Invitational with a time of 7.63 seconds, edging Ashlee Shroyer of Tolono Unity (7.67) for top honors in the Class A field.
Bera's performance was the best by an Illinek on the day as the Uni girls placed 14th out of 35 Class A schools and 30th out of 55 teams overall.
Senior Lizzy Warner also earned points with a seventh-place finish in the 400 (1:04.99), about four and a half seconds behind winner Leeann Michl of Newton (1:00.40).
The Illineks finished with 12 points. Newton (48) won the Class A title, while AA East St. Louis scored a meet-best 67. Even though the IHSA has reorganized girls track and field into three enrollment classes (1A, 2A, 3A), the Charleston Invite retains the previous two-class system (A and AA).
Warner has already qualified for the March 27-28 Illinois Prep Top Times Meet in Bloomington, the unofficial state meet for indoor track. She made the cut in the 400, turning in a time of 1:04.74 at the Feb. 25 Uni High Invite at the Armory.
Bera's performance in the 55 at Charleston will likely garner her an invitation to IPTT as well, since it ranks among the top five times in Class A so far this indoor season. The sprinter narrowly missed qualifying for the IHSA outdoor state meet last May when she placed third in the 100 dash at sectionals.
