URBANA — The host Illineks used dominating performances in the second and third quarters to pull away from Judah Christian in a 68-49 conference victory Monday night.

Senior Rachel Skoza scored a game-high 21 points and narrowly missed a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds as Uni improved to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

Freshman Jamie Blue continued to impress with her play in the varsity ranks, recording her first triple double of the season: 12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists.

But the most eye-popping stats of the game belonged to senior Joy Shapley, who dominated the offensive boards and finished with a game-high 17 rebounds to go along with 14 points.

The trio had plenty of help. Senior Jessi Sullivan scored nine points, including a three-pointer, and dished out four assists. Junior guard Michelle Wong also had four assists.

Although the game ended in a runaway victory for the Illineks, the contest started as many Uni-Judah crosstown affairs do: with hard-nosed, evenly matched play. By the end of the first eight minuted, the Illineks and Tribe were deadlocked at 11.

But in the second quarter Uni's superior inside strength became apparent, and the Illineks scored at a blistering pace. They used a 25-15 run to go into halftime ahead 36-26.

After the break there was little let-up from the hosts as they outscored the Tribe 16-10 to lead 52-36 at the start of the fourth quarter. Both teams played solid ball in the final eight minutes, but Uni stretched its lead by three to end with a 19-point victory.

The Illineks have a chance to head into winter break with a winning record when they play LeRoy on Saturday in a nonconference game.
