BUCKLEY — The Illineks won all five of their matches at Saturday's Christ Lutheran Invitational to earn the tournament title.

Their record now stands at 17-7 overall, while remaining 6-1 in the East Central Illinois Conference. The team needs three more wins to tie the school record of 20 set by last season.

Junior Michelle Wong was named tournament MVP. She recorded 84 assists and 18 digs for the day. Rachel Skoza was named to the all-tournament team, recording 47 kills and 15 aces.

At the end of the tourney, Skoza had broken two more school records. She now holds the career and season record for kills at 423 and 199 respectively. Earlier this season she set the Uni career record for blocks.

The career record was previously held by Elisabeth Pollock (1996-98) with 393 kills, and the season record was held by Amanda (Smeltzer) Palla (1996) with 175 kills.

Senior Annie Machesky had a good day, recording a team high 48 digs. Senior Jessi Sullivan followed Skoza in kills with 19, right before junior Rachel Harmon with 18.

In the tournament, Uni played Buckley Christ Lutheran, Cornerstone Christian, and Judah Christian.

Uni faced Judah in the championship match and beat The Tribe in three games (24-26, 25-8, 15-11).

The Illineks won their first match of the day, against host BCL, in two games: 25-13, 25-17. This was the quickest and most well-played match of the tournament for Uni. After beating the Crusaders two nights before in conference action, Uni had no problem doing it again.

The girls won their second match 25-19, 25-24 against Cornerstone Christian. In their third match they went up against Judah and won 25-7, 25-20. The first three matches of the tournament were played in two games, first to 25 to save time.

For their fourth match of the day, the Illineks had to face Cornerstone again. This time it took Uni three games to win.

This was the most exciting match of the day. The Illineks won 20-25, 25-15, 15-7, putting them in the championship match against Judah.

The team has five more conference matches remaining, the next one taking place at Decatur Christian on Tuesday.
