URBANA — For the second game in two nights, the Uni High Illineks overwhelmed their opponent on both sides of the floor.
Uni won its second game of the Central Illinois Turkey Tourney by dominating the Buckley Christ Lutheran Crusaders 69-17 at Kenney Gym. Uni is now 2-0 on the season.
It didn’t take very long to figure out that the Crusaders were overmatched by Uni’s superior play on both sides of the ball. Despite starting four players who began last night's game on the bench and using the nine players from the usual rotation equally, Uni began the game with a 15-0 run and never looked back.
Uni had a 22-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, and took an overwhelming 51-7 lead into halftime.
The second half was played with a running clock and didn’t impact much more than the final 69-17 score.
“We got a win,” said head coach Joel Beesley. “That’s about all there was to it.”
Scoring opportunities were aplenty for all members of the varsity. Chumar Williams led the Illineks with 13 points, and fellow senior Isaac Radnitzer added 12. Senior Mike Renner and junior Alan Kessler scored 11 points each.
Renner now has 1,095 career points, putting him just 18 behind Uni's second all-time leading scorer, Doug Brown. The 1963 graduate scored 1,113 points and held the record until Renner's brother Alex broke it in December 2005. Alex finished his career in February 2006 with 1,372 points.
Two newcomers to varsity — sophomores Neil Pearson and Nile Hamer — scored their first varsity baskets late in the fourth quarter.
Last season, Uni won all three games it played against BCL, winning 50-44, 79-51, and 62-55. The Illineks will continue the Turkey Tourney on Friday at Kenney Gym when they take on Bement at 7:45 p.m.
Also in Tuesday CITT action, the Uni JV easily handled the Shiloh JV 36-15.
