DELAND — Three days after breaking the school record for volleyball wins, the Uni girls got back to work Tuesday and produced yet another victory, defeating host DeLand-Weldon in two games 25-19, 25-15.

The conference win improves Uni's season mark to 19-9 overall, 8-2 in the East Central Illinois Conference.

Uni is now solidly in command of second place in the ECIC. Only Decatur Lutheran, which was 21-2 overall and undefeated in conference play after the weekend, is ahead of the Illineks.

MATCH AT A GLANCE

  • Result: Uni defeats DeLand-Weldon 25-19, 25-15
  • Uni record: 19-9 overall, 8-2 ECIC
  • Recap: The Illineks took care of the host Eagles in a quick two-game win
  • Next match (varsity): Decatur Lutheran, Oct. 16 at Kenney Gym; JV match to begin at 6 p.m.

The girls will get a chance to pull off the upset and hand Decatur Lutheran only its second ECIC loss in four years when they host the Lady Lions on Tuesday. Until then, they will be idle.

The junior varsity, however, will be plenty active Saturday when Uni hosts an eight-team JV tournament.

Against DeLand-Weldon, senior middle hitter Karen Woodley led the Illineks with seven kills.

Junior middle hitter Rachel Skoza, fresh off her MVP performance at Saturday's Crusader Invitational in which Uni went 5-0 and won the tourney title, recorded five kills and a team-high two blocks.

Senior setter Ruthie Welch had nine assists, increasing her school career record for assists to 830. She came into this season with 600 and has added 230 in 28 matches. Junior Sheri Grill was second with four assists, followed by Claire Johnson with two.

Welch also led the team in aces with seven. Johnson had five.

A trio of Illineks finished the match with four digs apiece: Welch, Johnson, and senior outside hitter Sarah Pfander. Junior Annie Machesky had three.

The varsity has only two matches left in the regular season. After the Decatur Lutheran contest, the girls will finish up with Judah Christian on Oct. 19, also at Kenney Gym.

Then comes the Class 2A postseason. Uni is seeded ninth out of 11 teams in Sub-Sectional B of the 20-team Tolono Unity sectional.

The Illineks find themselves in perhaps the toughest Class 2A playoff bracket in central Illinois. The sub-sectional's No. 1 team is undefeated Maroa-Forsyth. The No. 2 seed is Monticello, whose only loss this year was to Maroa-Forsyth. Other teams in the bracket include St. Thomas More, Tolono Unity, and St. Joseph-Ogden.

Uni will begin playoff action Oct. 23 against No. 7 Clinton. The contest is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Clinton High School. If the Illineks win, they would face Monticello two days later. That match would be played at Monticello High, beginning at 5 p.m.
