CHARLESTON — Uni High's 2007-08 yearbook has won top honors for best sports coverage and best theme development in Eastern Illinois University's annual competition.

Participating in the under-500 enrollment category, Uni High also won second place overall for last year's edition. Joel Beesley advised the staff, and 2008 graduates Frankie McFarland, Christopher Nixon, Mike Renner, and Suran Yoo edited the book.

The University of Chicago Lab School's U-Highlights won first place in the under-500 division. Carbondale Community's The Dial won top honors in the 500-1,200 division, and Grayslake North's A Knight's Tale won the over-1,200 title.

In all, Uni earned five awards in the 2008 Eastern Illinois High School Press Association yearbook contest:

  • 2nd — Best Overall Yearbook
  • 1st — Best Sports Coverage
  • 1st — Best Theme Development
  • 3rd — Best Layout and Design
  • 3rd — Best Divider Pages

The honors are the latest in a string of successes for Uni's yearbook staff. Last year the 2006-07 book also won second place in the EIHSPA contest.

In April, yearbook staffers and Gargoyle staffers teamed up to win a sectional championship in the opening round of the IHSA journalism tournament and second place at the state meet.
