URBANA — Artwork by two Uni students will adorn the CD version of Uni High's new radio documentary, "Competing Against Discrimination: Achieving Equality in Athletics at the University of Illinois," which had its broadcast premiere Saturday evening on WILL AM-580.

Subfreshman Andrew Lumetta's design will be used on the front of the jewel case, according to social studies executive teacher Janet Morford, and sophomore Claire Billingsley's design will be imprinted on the CD itself. Copies of the artwork are not yet available for publication in the OG.

The winning designs were submitted as part of a contest open to all Uni students. The winners were selected this week.

"The judges were very impressed with the range and quality of designs submitted by students from all grades at Uni," Morford said today in a schoolwide e-mail. She was the Uni faculty liaison with WILL during the production of the documentary. "Thanks again to all of the contestants for putting your creativity to work on this project."

The hourlong program is now available on the WILL Web site as both a RealAudio archive and an MP3 download.

The show is based on 16 interviews with former U of I athletes and other members of the local community conducted by the Uni High Class of 2011. The students did the research as part of their subfreshman oral history project under the direction of Janet Morford.

Senior Annie Machesky and junior Maria Gao produced the program in conjunction with WILL's Dave Dickey; they also narrated the program.

Other students who served on the editing team were junior Katherine Allen and sophomores Katherine Floess, Sheela Gogula, Youyang Gu (who has since moved), and Adam Joseph.

According to Dickey, some 50 to 60 CDs containing the program will be made. The CD cover design will be selected from entries in a student contest, he said.

The documentary is another in the long line of cooperative projects between Uni High and WILL. Dating back to the 1990s, the station has worked with student volunteers to transform subfreshman oral history interviews into tightly edited hourlong programs. Many of these have gone on to win major communications awards.

When they're available

The article says: "Copies of the artwork are not yet available for publication in the OG."

We have talked to Dave Dickey of WILL. He said the plan is to work on the designs a bit to get them ready for publication. Dave said that will take a couple of weeks. Once they're ready, the OG will receive copies and publish them.
