Subfreshman wins Scholastic Gold Award in nationwide writing contest

Posted Thursday, May 4, 2006, The OG, student awards

Subfreshman Sindha Agha has won a national-level Gold Award in the 2006 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

Agha won in the short story category for “The Velveteen Rabbit Remembered,” which depicts family life at a favorite vacation destination. Rosemary Laughlin is her English teacher.

As recognition for her accomplishment, Sindha has been invited to attend the Scholastic awards ceremony and related workshops, which will be held in New York City in June.

Earlier this spring, Agha and subfreshman Vivian Robison both advanced to the national level after winning Gold awards in their regional competition. Robison was recognized for “Star Bleck,” a humorous satire of “Star Trek.”

Last year Jacob Druker, now a Uni freshman, won a Gold Award at the national level in the science fiction/fantasy category for his story “20/20.”

Out of the estimated 250,000 students who compete in the Scholastic contest annually, only 1,100 receive national awards. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers administers the competition. The Scholastic awards program was established in 1923.
